Being the early leader in that cycle could be critical to be the next big thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By race six, seven, I think we&#8217;ll have a good idea of who the teams are that will be dominating for the four years after that,&#8221; Ferrari&#8217;s Charles Leclerc told reporters after the race in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Drivers are set for an entirely new car in 2026. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/d57b7fce75276159e5a0132365cd035c4a7d8447.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Drivers are set for an entirely new car in 2026. \u00a0NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>It makes the Australian Grand Prix, to be held in Melbourne on the weekend of March 8, an even more intriguing prospect than usual, with a whole new set of unknowns to play out for the first time in our backyard.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s answer some burning questions about the biggest rule changes since 2022 that are part of the biggest technical overhaul the sport has seen in over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>What changes are coming to F1 in 2026?<\/p>\n<p>The core objective of the new regulations is to make the F1 cars &#8220;more agile and competitive&#8221; with the ability to battle with ease on track.<\/p>\n<p>The new specifications are meant to create more opportunities for passing.<\/p>\n<p>Cars will feature an active aerodynamics system, a lighter chassis, a redesigned power unit and a difference in the overtaking opportunities on track.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"This is the largest technical change since 2022. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c00ed8940ffba0fb246f33b52b388797b911ccdc.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">This is the largest technical change since 2022. \u00a0NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The all-new aerodynamics package comes in the form of moveable front and rear wings to allow for closer racing.<\/p>\n<p>Greater cornering speeds will be possible with one wing angle deployed and when the second angle is deployed, lower drag and greater straight-line speed will be achieved.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/motorsport\/f1-news-2025-fia-controversy-mohammed-ben-sulayem-race-director-paddock-dissatisfaction-20250422-p5ludp.html\" class=\"Link-styles__Wrapper-sc-b307e8cd-0 cqBmwR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIA<\/a> has announced that downforce has been reduced by 30 per cent and drag has been reduced by 55 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Will the 2026 F1 cars be slower than F2 cars?<\/p>\n<p>Short answer, no.<\/p>\n<p>Long answer, still no. But with some extra context.<\/p>\n<p>The cars are set to be more competitive in 2026, prioritising better on-track battling over a single lap.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The technical regulations are set to make battles closer on track. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/51c041d3eecc2d64f2b619e70df64cd04d21ae8c.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">The technical regulations are set to make battles closer on track. \u00a0Getty<\/p>\n<p>Initial reports have sounded alarm bells around the F1 world as they suggested a pretty significant drop in speed by about one to two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/rb-6gkr\" class=\"Link-styles__Wrapper-sc-b307e8cd-0 cqBmwR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Racing Bulls<\/a> driver Isack Hadjar suggested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/motorsport\/f1-news-2025-las-vegas-grand-prix-problems-fernando-alonso-comments-fia-driver-relationship-issues-20251122-p5ni8r.html\" class=\"Link-styles__Wrapper-sc-b307e8cd-0 cqBmwR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Las Vegas<\/a> that, based on his experience in the simulator, the 2026 cars are &#8220;closer to an F2 [car]&#8221;, fans obviously were not happy.<\/p>\n<p>With the promise of faster cars, the idea in F1 is that we see the pinnacle of motorsport on display every weekend.<\/p>\n<p>So, a significant level of performance drop in the cars that race in 2026 was something that didn&#8217;t add up. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alex Albon was handed a penalty for causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/33a4925baf052f00e181e2e234be6179d0f7b61d.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Lap times are set to be slower in 2026.  \u00a0Getty<\/p>\n<p>The FIA&#8217;s lap time simulations suggest this gaping difference will not be the case and despite the changes, single seater technical director Nikolas Tombazis believes that the reduction in lap time will only be one to two seconds initially.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Comments about Formula 2 pace are way off the mark,&#8221; he said when asked about the expected pace drop-off.<\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin&#8217;s reserve driver Jak Crawford, who has also driven the car in the sim, said that &#8220;it&#8217;s quite similar to drive to an F2 car&#8221;, although didn&#8217;t comment on the lap pace specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Are they getting rid of DRS in 2026?<\/p>\n<p>DRS has effectively been abolished, in comes MOM.<\/p>\n<p>The new name will take some getting used to, but MOM stands for Manual Override Mode and describes the new overtaking method for drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of manipulating aerodynamics, MOM taps into Formula 1&#8217;s hybrid power units.<\/p>\n<p>FIA&#8217;s single seater technical director Jan Monchaux described that: &#8220;If you are within a given distance, before the end of a lap to the car in front of you, then for the following lap, you will be given the possibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/motorsport\/f1-news-2025-adrian-newey-2026-regulation-overhaul-warning-20250128-p5l7x2.html\" class=\"Link-styles__Wrapper-sc-b307e8cd-0 cqBmwR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">use more electrical energy than your opponent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That boost of electrical energy is there to replace what used to be the rear wing opening, to give a car that extra push to potentially go and try to overtake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now with the DRS you are behind a car, within a second, that ticks a box and you are allowed to open your DRS in a straight line. This will not be the case anymore,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, the logic will be the same: &#8216;I&#8217;m close enough to another car, I am given an extra amount of energy for that one lap, which I can deploy any way I want.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DRS is set to become less aerodynamic and more CPU based. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1c54b0f4aa56f37a9d81ba91131dfcbd558002f7.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">DRS is set to become less aerodynamic and more power unit based. \u00a0Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Just imagine the radio messages we&#8217;re set to hear.<\/p>\n<p>What are the new engine regulations for F1 in 2026?<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 engine regulations will use significantly less energy and produce net zero exhaust CO2 emissions, an act to get the sport towards their 2030 sustainability goals.<\/p>\n<p>Power will be split evenly between the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and electrical power.<\/p>\n<p>More braking energy, that would otherwise be wasted, will be collected and as a result the aim is for the MGU-K (Kinetic Motor Generator Unit) to produce around 350kW in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>This is a huge increase on the 120kW of energy currently deployed this season by the MGU-K and MGU-H.<\/p>\n<p>Will 2026 F1 engines be louder?<\/p>\n<p>Formula 1 fans are set for louder cars in 2026, cue the excitement.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe not where we are expecting it. <\/p>\n<p>Mercedes engine boss Hywel Thomas said fans will need to get used to a &#8220;completely new soundscape&#8221; when the new power units debut in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Formula 1 fans rue the end of the V8 engine era. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/71e368d47e679d09475006c90e1ebde12c22f7d6.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Formula 1 fans rue the end of the V8 engine era. \u00a0Darren Heath\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Normally, the engines run at low revs when braking and cornering. In 2026, the noise level is set to increase, even when the cars are not accelerating. This is due to the new energy recovery teams will need to manage without the MGU &#8211; H (Motor Generator Unit-Heat).<\/p>\n<p>Braking will still charge the battery, but it will not be enough to meet the much higher electrical demands of the new power units, which sits at 350kW.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, teams have devised a workaround that will significantly affect how the cars behave and sound.<\/p>\n<p>The engine will switch to full-throttle mode when braking and cornering to produce additional energy, which feeds directly into the battery.<\/p>\n<p>That means fans can expect high-rev engine noise even in slow speed sections, a quirk that may be strange at first.<\/p>\n<p>How much smaller are the 2026 cars?<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to create a more nimble racing machine, the 2026 F1 car&#8217;s maximum wheelbase has been reduced by 200mm to 3400mm while the width has been cut by 100mm to 1900mm.<\/p>\n<p>In layman&#8217;s terms: they cut off the length of an average reusable drink bottle size off and the width even less, the size of an average chocolate bar. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The FIA has released renders of a 2026 F1 car.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bbccfd55a53efb10f67b59cd626b536b05bc4367.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"d40ab0ad209f9332-text d40ab0ad209f9332-body-2\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">The FIA has released renders of a 2026 F1 car.\u00a0FIA<\/p>\n<p>The floor width has also been cut by 150mm.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this smaller chassis, the weight of the car has also dropped.
