{"id":339318,"date":"2025-12-10T11:46:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T11:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/339318\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T11:46:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T11:46:12","slug":"climate-crisis-is-threatening-disabled-australians-access-to-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/339318\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate crisis is threatening disabled Australians&#8217; access to nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Liz Tesone&#8217;s family love to swim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They organise day trips to the beach, swim in the local pool, and holiday at the Victorian coastal town, Inverloch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tesone is the CEO of not-for-profit organisation Disability Sport and Recreation and parent to two sons, the youngest of whom is Jordy, who was born with a rare genetic condition called Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS), an intellectual and physical disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You can replace the words &#8216;sport and recreation&#8217; with &#8216;community and belonging&#8217; in our family,&#8221; Tesone told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Especially water-based activities \u2014 they&#8217;re one of Jordy&#8217;s favourites. (Supplied: Liz Tesone)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Beach trips can be hard for Tesone&#8217;s family, in part because Jordy is weather-sensitive and chooses not to go outside if it&#8217;s raining or too hot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasting hotter than average temperatures and increased bushfire risks this summer, their beach days have already begun to dwindle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We turn to accessible swim programs at rec centres instead, but a lot of the time they&#8217;re designed for people with physical disabilities, not those with complex intellectual disabilities and their families and carers,&#8221; Tesone said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is just one way that the impacts of the climate crisis can disproportionately affect people with disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As Australia experiences greater climate change over the coming years \u2014 from bushfires and decreasing air quality to flooding and erosion \u2014 it will get harder for disabled people to access nature and recreation activities.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal erosion impacting beach access<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A landscape shot of a bay and sandy beach, framed by dark green trees. (Getty Images: Quincy Lee)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the seaside town of Inverloch on Bunurong country, 150 kilometres south-east of Naarm (Melbourne), a popular getaway spot for hiking, beaches, and dinosaur tours, the town is one of the frontline communities in Australia facing the climate crisis head-on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Climate impacts are definitely affecting our family&#8217;s access to natural spaces,&#8221; Tesone said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We holiday in Inverloch, and a few years ago, some big storms came through, and there was a massive erosion event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We couldn&#8217;t access the beach at all until they&#8217;d reworked the two-metre erosion drop off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A view across sandbags and a beach on a partly cloudy day.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/54448b0eae460c795ab4263ca9d91ea3\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Work to combat erosion at Inverloch has been delayed. (ABC Gippsland: Danielle Kutchel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Storm surges and erosion have been major issues at Inverloch for years, with community groups like Friends of the Earth&#8217;s Act on Climate and the Bass Coast Climate Action Network advocating with the state government for swift and comprehensive action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After $3.3 million of funding was granted in 2022, some sandbags have been installed underneath the Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club and along the beach, but further works have <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-24\/inverloch-coastal-erosion-foi-government\/105995048\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been delayed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the government is sitting on the majority of the funding allocated to combat erosion at Inverloch, the grant application for those funds identified that the economic impact of permanent erosion in the area has an estimated price tag of between $2 million and $80 million annually in lost tourism revenue alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These numbers do not consider other realms of economic detriment (to homes and infrastructure), or the human cost of decreased access to nature for disabled people and others with access needs.<\/p>\n<p>A growing demographic<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/research\/environmental-impacts\/climate-change\/state-of-the-climate\/australias-changing-climate\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CSIRO reported<\/a> in 2024 that climate catastrophes like flooding, extreme heat, and storm surges will further intensify &#8220;proportional to the rate of global warming&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the same time, numbers of disabled people in our society continue to grow, with <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/media-centre\/media-releases\/55-million-australians-have-disability\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting<\/a> more than one in five people had a disability in 2022, up 3.7 per cent from the previous census data in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health and social factors, such as Australia&#8217;s ageing population, severe housing inequalities, and the continuing mass-disabling event of COVID-19, are increasing rates of disability, while environmental factors are forcing people to adapt behaviourally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sign upon a signpost with a person in a wheelchair on it. (Getty Images: Ela Yilmaz)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Disability advocate Laura Pettenuzzo told the ABC that access to outdoor spaces was key to the wellbeing and life quality of people with disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Given the ongoing pandemic, the outdoors is one of the few places besides my home that are safe for me,&#8221; Pettenuzzo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m lucky to live near Merri Creek, and one of my favourite things to do is take my wheelchair along the creek because it feels like being in a little oasis of nature, even though traffic is just 50 metres away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A landscape shot of a winding path next to a river and green grass. (Supplied: Laura Pettenuzzo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Pettenuzzo also has to plan her outings according to the weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If water gets in the electronics of my wheelchair, I&#8217;m screwed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t go outside if it&#8217;s expected to rain, or even recently post-rain because I can get stuck in damp ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Then it feels like I&#8217;m a burden because I have to ask other people to help get my wheelchair unstuck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I also can&#8217;t take my wheelchair out if it gets too hot, because the electronics can overheat and stop working, and the metal parts can get scorching hot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What can we do to ensure disabled people aren&#8217;t left behind in the climate crisis?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As the climate crisis deepens, there are ways to make sure people with disability aren&#8217;t excluded from accessing beaches and other outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At Frankston Foreshore in Victoria, Australia&#8217;s Most Accessible Beach Pilot Program features matting to the water&#8217;s edge, complimentary beach wheelchairs and hoists, shaded day beds, accessible toilets, as well as trained staff on hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We can make changes to the natural environment without damaging it \u2014 like matting, so I can wheel along the sand \u2014 to ensure people with varied access needs can enjoy the beach,&#8221; Pettenuzzo said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sandy beach with a path of blue matting and waterproof wheelchairs\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4b21c5d255ff5c6b62131a1370e43cd6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Accessible beaches, like this one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are becoming more common around the world.
