Australians are being warned not to travel to a large stretch of Asia as conflict between Thailand and Cambodia intensifies.<\/p>\n
The border, which stretches 800km from the Gulf of Thailand to the junction point with the south end of Laos, is now seen as high risk for imminent attacks.<\/p>\n
As the region, which is popular with Australian tourists, approaches a peak travel period for the summer school holidays, the Australian Government is warning holidaymakers not to go near the area, adding assistance may not be offered if an Aussie is caught up in serious trouble.<\/p>\n

By continuing you agree to our Terms<\/a> and Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n Smartraveller on Tuesday issued updated advice for the Thailand-Cambodia border, telling Australians \u201ddo not travel\u201d within 50km of either side of the border, along its full 800km stretch, as fears of all out war grow.<\/p>\n \u201cDue to ongoing armed clashes along the Cambodia-Thailand border which have included military strikes and violence, and the presence of landmines and unexploded ordinances, we advise do not travel to areas within 50 kilometres of the Cambodia-Thailand border,\u201d Smartraveller said in a statement.<\/p>\n The \u201cdo not travel\u201d warning applies to the provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Battambang, Pailin, Pursat, and Koh Kong.<\/p>\n \u201cThe security situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border remains unpredictable. Land border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand remain closed.\u201d<\/p>\n The overview of the situation along the border, and in both Thailand and Cambodia, also highlights the ongoing risk of terrorist and politically motivated attacks, especially around major events, holidays, large crowds and tourist attractions.<\/p>\n A do not travel warning, classed as a level four, means an Australian\u2019s health and safety would be at \u201cextreme risk\u201d, accroding to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), who operate Smartraveller.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you get into trouble, the Australian Government may be unable to help,\u201d Smartraveller warns when a level four alert is in place.<\/p>\n \u201cIn most cases, our ability to provide consular assistance in these destinations is extremely limited.\u201d<\/p>\n On Tuesday, Thailand launched airstrikes along the border, which is disputed, after it claimed Cambodia breached the peace deal brokered by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n Cambodia accuses Thailand of the same.<\/p>\n The border dispute had erupted into a five-day war in July, before a ceasefire deal was brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Mr Trump, who also witnessed the signing of an expanded peace agreement between the two countries in Kuala Lumpur in October.<\/p>\n At least 48 people were killed and an estimated 300,000 temporarily displaced during the July clashes, with the neighbours exchanging rockets and heavy artillery fire.
