JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER\u2019S cultural whirl, the NGV<\/a> has teamed up with Comme des Gar\u00e7ons (CDG)<\/a> \u2014 and the pairing feels almost inevitable in the best way. From today, the NGV design store unveils a Melbourne-exclusive POCKET installation, offering a small but satisfyingly potent glimpse into Rei Kawakubo\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

It launches alongside Westwood | Kawakubo<\/a>, the exhibition bringing together two of fashion\u2019s great independents, and the store edit carries that same quiet defiance. The NGV x CDG range spans tees, shirts, accessories and homewares \u2014 all stamped with loud-but-true declarations about freedom, rebellion and self-expression. <\/p>\n

Think white jersey T-shirts for all genders that casually announce things like \u201cmy energy comes from freedom and a rebellious spirit\u201d across the front.<\/p>\n

Even the more classic pieces play along. Blue-and-white striped shirts come printed with playful type on the reverse; leather pouches turn everyday essentials into personality statements; even the mugs and tumblers feel like they\u2019re part of Kawakubo\u2019s<\/a> ongoing conversation about strength and individuality. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s fashion, but also philosophy \u2014 just distilled into objects you\u2019ll actually use.<\/p>\n

Alongside the exclusives, the installation gathers favourites from PLAY, Wallet Comme des Gar\u00e7ons<\/a> and the full fragrance universe \u2014 essentially a condensed CDG ecosystem sitting neatly on St Kilda Road.<\/p>\n

NGV Director Tony Ellwood<\/a> describes the collaboration as being \u201cimbued with her creative spirit and deeply personal worldview,\u201d and you can feel that in the edit: it\u2019s concise, thoughtful, and a little theatrical in the way only Kawakubo can be.<\/p>\n

Melbourne doesn\u2019t often get moments like this \u2014 where fashion, art and ideology meet so cleanly. If you\u2019re inclined to collect things that say something (quietly, but with conviction), this is one worth moving on quickly.<\/p>\n
