meeting in South Korea in October, after which the US agreed to cut tariffs on Chinese imports by 10 per cent, has <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-30\/key-takeaways-from-october-trump-and-xi-meeting\/105952166\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105952166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warmed geopolitical relations but hasn&#8217;t made a substantial trade difference<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead of being stymied by the US, China has offset the decline in breathtaking speed by replacing the demand with burgeoning markets elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The last year has seen a tsunami of Chinese exports into markets in Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and even Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cars, machinery, solar panels, consumer electronics and other manufactured goods are being shipped off to the world, at a breakneck pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Australia, Chinese imports have jumped 18 per cent in the three months to October, compared to the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And in the European Union, China now sells double the amount of goods it buys, drastically expanding its trade surplus with the region over the last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/monde\/europe\/la-chine-vient-percuter-le-coeur-du-modele-industriel-europeen-previent-emmanuel-macron-2203223\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Backlash is now brewing in Europe<\/a>, where it&#8217;s feared local manufacturing factories will be forced to scale back production, or close for good, after struggling to match what China can offer far cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>Loading\u00a0European leaders visit China<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s unsurprising then, that a string of European dignitaries and leaders \u2014 including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spain&#8217;s King Felipe and Germany&#8217;s finance and foreign ministers \u2014 have made recent visits to China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Britain&#8217;s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/british-pm-starmer-plans-visit-china-late-january-sources-say-2025-12-03\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to visit early next year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">During a three-day stay in China earlier this month, Macron revealed he had warned China&#8217;s leader Xi Jinping to curb Beijing&#8217;s large trade surplus with the European Union.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-09\/china-trade-surplus-tops-one-trillion\/106118828\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China trade surplus passes $US1 trillion for first time<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">China&#8217;s record trade surplus comes as manufacturers seeking to avoid US President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs ship more to Europe, Australia and South-East Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;China is hitting the heart of the European industrial and innovation model,&#8221;
