(ABC Rural: Tayla Larsen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As the industry faces pressure from shrinking plantings and waning investment, he is among the few not giving up on sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Paid to plant<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Rackemann&#8217;s cane crop is one of the first for the small community, which will be crushed at the Isis Central Sugar Mill, 70 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2024, the mill offered farmers $500 per hectare to plant on land not used for cane in the past three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Chief executive Craig Wood said supply had increased as other nearby mills closed, but the future remained uncertain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man looks into the camera as steam billows out from a sugar mill behind him.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/49ce79e2593134d3ab821f6cb2d6ae19\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Craig Wood says more cane is being planted for the Isis Central Sugar Mill to process. (ABC Rural: Tayla Larsen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Rackemann is trialling five varieties on irrigated and dry land across 46 hectares, which will be ready for harvest next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re still learning \u2026 but it&#8217;s exceeded all expectations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We just got estimates in terms of yield, and I&#8217;m pretty happy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the irrigated cane yielded about 110 to 120 tonnes per hectare, while the dry land was close to the mill&#8217;s 10-year average of between 80 and 90 tonnes per hectare.<\/p>\n<p>Grass is greener<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It did not take long for farmers in the small community to notice the new crop and its potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Rackemanns&#8217; neighbour Kerry Dove planted his sugarcane trial block almost a year ago, hoping for a reliable alternative to his usual rotation crops.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A farmer walking in between rows of tall sugarcane.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/4cda3d17b3dee72a2754499c490ec623\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kerry Dove is experimenting with sugarcane on 4 hectares of unirrigated land. (ABC Rural: Tayla Larsen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If successful, he could plant a further 30 hectares.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t rely on incentives all the time, so you&#8217;ve got to make it pay on its own merits,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In the next couple of years, there will be more trials and a little bit more confidence may build in the area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A rare opportunity<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Grower representative group Canegrowers chief executive Dan Galligan said over the past 20 years, tough weather conditions and poor mill performance had contributed to many leaving the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he said diversification projects, like using cane for biofuels, had helped slow the trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing places expand out of what might have been horticultural crops back into cane,&#8221; Mr Galligan said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sugar mill with steam coming out of two stacks. (ABC Wide Bay: Nikki Sorbello)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While planting incentives were commonly used to increase cane supply, Mr Galligan said the trial at Coalstoun Lakes was unique.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brand new, 100 per cent never growing cane on the land before or farmers having never grown cane is relatively unusual,&#8221;  he said.Rewriting the rule book<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Isis mill&#8217;s productivity services officer Anthony LaRocca has been tasked with making the crop work, 150 kilometres from the coast, where frost, lack of water, and volcanic rock present new challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He worked with farmers to determine planting windows and appropriate cane varieties, and to manage their expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That region is different from what is a common cane-growing area, so we didn&#8217;t want to elevate their expectations beyond what we thought was capable,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s new to all of us \u2026 we know cane, but we don&#8217;t necessarily know how cane is going to go in that area.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a high-vis work uniform smiles out the front of an office building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/235eb8bdcb93f2519d5deda23cd1e4d0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Anthony LaRocca has been helping farmers throughout the sugarcane trial.
