The time has come for \u201cScreen Talk<\/a>\u201d podcasts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio (that\u2019s us) to share their top 10 films of 2025<\/a>. Ryan Coogler\u2019s Southern vampire epic \u201cSinners\u201d leads Anne\u2019s list, with Alain Guiraudie\u2019s queer noir \u201cMisericordia\u201d topping Ryan\u2019s. See our rankings below or listen in this week\u2019s podcast episode. <\/p>\n

The only film<\/a> we overlapped on was, of course, Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n

On this week\u2019s episode, we also parse the implications of Netflix vs. Paramount<\/a> in acquiring Warner Bros. and assess which buyer we think is best for Hollywood. The writing was already on the wall even before the deal was launched last week. As the number of films released by studios suffers attrition, box office numbers are down, and theater attendance is spread across IP and animated films and select originals throughout 2025, it\u2019s clear: Hollywood cannot stay the same, even as this news suggests worse things to come. Don\u2019t panic yet, we advise.<\/p>\n

\"Resurrection\"<\/a> \"'The<\/a> <\/p>\n

President Trump didn\u2019t state a preference for a buyer until this week, when he said he wanted Warner Bros. Discovery-operated CNN to be part of the deal. Paramount\u2019s pitch to shareholders is to keep the company intact, whereas WBD\u2019s David Zaslav would spin off Discovery\u2019s cable assets and CNN and sell to Netflix Warners\u2019 streaming and theatrical arms (including Warner Bros. the studio, HBO, and HBO Max).<\/p>\n

In the past week and a half, the Golden Globes<\/a> and the American Film Institute<\/a> also unveiled their nominees and honorees for the best of 2025<\/a>. What do these groups indicate for Oscar hopes ahead? <\/p>\n

\u201cWicked: For Good\u201d is looking weak as a potential Best Picture nominee after losing out on a best musical nomination at the Globes, though stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both received acting nominations. Erivo\u2019s Best Actress nomination is looking less secure, especially as Rose Byrne rises in the ranks for her performance in \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You\u201d among a number of critics groups.<\/p>\n

We also look at who\u2019s ahead in the best international feature Oscar race, as shortlists will unveil on Tuesday. You can expect at least four, but possibly five, Neon titles to be among the list of 15: \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d \u201cSirat,\u201d \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d and \u201cNo Other Choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

As an addendum to our top 10 lists, Anne also singles out Embeth Davidtz\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Let\u2019s Go to the Dogs Tonight\u201d as a best first feature, and Raoul Peck\u2019s \u201cOrwell: 2+2=5\u201d as the best documentary. Ryan gives \u201cThe Testament of Ann Lee\u201d and \u201cRoofman\u201d honorary mentions. Tomorrow, IndieWire\u2019s entire staff will share their own top 10 lists.<\/p>\n
