{"id":344164,"date":"2025-12-12T23:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T23:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/344164\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T23:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T23:28:11","slug":"record-gold-prices-drive-investment-in-exploration-across-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/344164\/","title":{"rendered":"Record gold prices drive investment in exploration across Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mick Shorter first came to Australia&#8217;s gold mining capital of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as a teenager looking for a job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The week before his 18th birthday, he started labouring as a driller&#8217;s offsider. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Decades later, puffing on a cigarette while working the controls of a drill rig, he is at the coalface of a modern-day gold rush.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I like it because you&#8217;re out in the bush, you&#8217;re playing in the mud,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like you&#8217;re a little kid. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p>Finding the golden goose<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While Mr Shorter has spent the past 30 years drilling for gold and other minerals, he has never actually seen the yellow metal. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Thirty years I&#8217;ve been doing this, and I&#8217;ve never seen any gold,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s obviously there, but I&#8217;ve never seen it in any samples. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You can tell what sort of rocks are good, that might host them [gold deposits], so when you find quartz and stuff, yeah, you&#8217;re pretty happy.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In most cases, gold is not visible to the human eye and requires scientific analysis in an assay laboratory. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Edward Mead, a veteran geologist and director of ASX-listed gold explorer Riversgold, said the results were crucial for planning the next phases of exploration, or more simply &#8220;where we put the next drill hole&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Six months ago, getting assays through the local laboratory would take 10 to 14 days. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we first contemplated putting Devon into production, we were working on a gold price of $3,500 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t get any better than this &#8230; people are predicting $10,000 an ounce in the future. Are we going to see that?
