Natalie Morales<\/a> has worked in news for more than 25 years, but she believes the story of Survivor<\/a> alum Joe Hunter<\/a> and his sister, Joanna, may be one of the most important true crime stories she\u2019s ever covered.<\/p>\n

Joe, 46, and Joanna\u2019s story<\/a> is now the subject of an upcoming episode of 48 Hours, titled \u201cJoe Hunter\u2019s Mission,\u201d in which Morales, 53, is the lead correspondent.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really is an emotional one,\u201d she tells Us Weekly exclusively. \u201cI think probably one of the most important true crime stories, I think, I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joanna died in 2011 at age 36 in her California home, and police ruled it a suicide. On the surface, there was every reason to. Her husband, Mark Lewis, claimed to find her body with no signs of a struggle and evidence that pointed to Joanna taking her own life.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom the murder of Gabby Petito to the Rust tragedy, many true crime documentaries are coming our way in 2025. Hulu announced in February the release of Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, which comes two years after actor Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 following cinematographer Halyna Hutchins\u2019 [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

But Joe and his family never believed that\u2019s what happened. Lewis had a history of domestic violence and inconsistencies soon emerged that shed doubt on investigators\u2019 findings. The case has since been re-examined several times but Joanna\u2019s official cause of death has remained the same. Lewis, who denies killing her, has never faced charges related to the case.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Joe] just talked about feeling like he failed his sister, that he was [on Survivor] to be her voice,\u201d Morales, 53, said. \u201cHe was competing for her, trying to do something to honor her memory, and really to raise attention and awareness to domestic violence survivors and what they go through.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hunter family has done more than raise awareness, which is another reason why Morales grew so passionate about the story. Joe and his mother, Patricia, led the charge on helping pass Joanna\u2019s Law in California<\/a>, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law in 2024.<\/p>\n

The law requires law enforcement to examine 10 factors in any suspicious death in which there is a history of domestic violence before closing the investigation. Factors include one partner wanting to end the relationship, the deceased being found by their partner and that partner being the last person to see them alive.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLifetime\u2019s docuseries The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson shared new details of Nicole Brown Simpson\u2018s life before examining her tumultuous relationship with O.J. Simpson. The first two installments of the four-part docuseries, which premiered on Saturday, June 1, featured interviews from Nicole\u2019s star-studded friends such as Kris Jenner and Faye Resnick\u00a0 and members [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

Joanna\u2019s death checked all 10 boxes but was never investigated as a potential homicide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe responding officer took photos of the scene, bagged up the [alleged suicide] note and whatever else was found,\u201d Morales explained. \u201cBut they didn\u2019t swab for DNA at the time. They didn\u2019t document the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

That meant crucial evidence that could shed more light on Joanna\u2019s death, including a rope that one doctor interviewed for 48 Hours believes to have been the murder weapon, is now gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never heard of the term hidden homicides until reporting on this case,\u201d Morales said. \u201cThe more I started investing in [this case], the more it raised awareness to me, of all the past stories that I\u2019ve done where, you know, \u2018was that looked into enough? Was the investigation handled the way it should have been?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Hunter\u2019s Mission\u201d not only dives into the case itself, but tells the story of Joanna\u2019s relationship with Lewis, in which she alleged to have been physically abused multiple times, with Lewis pleading guilty to felony spousal abuse more than a decade before. She also tried to leave the relationship, but continually found herself drawn back in.<\/p>\n

Lewis has not publicly addressed Joanna\u2019s previous allegations of abuse and refused to speak to 48 Hours.<\/p>\n
