Three local governments have struck a long-awaited deal for the long-term future of the Regional Resource Recovery Centre in Canning Vale, confirming a new operator to process greens and materials recycling.

Re.Group — an Australian-owned recycling company founded in 2013 — officially took over at the facility on December 1 and will run it for up to the next 20 years.

The cities of Canning, Melville and Fremantle have been working together since mid-2023 to secure the long-term future of the Canning Vale centre, one of only three material recovery facilities in Perth.

Re.Group has replaced the Resource Recovery Group — formerly known as the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council — which ceased trading on November 30 after all its member councils left.

The lease for the RRRC was surrendered by the SMRC, which by that stage comprised only the cities of Melville and Fremantle, to the City of Canning — which owns the site — for free in November so it could then lease it to another operator.

Up to $12.5 million is expected to be invested over the coming years to modernise the plant and improve resource recovery.

RRG chair and City of Melville councillor Karen Wheatland said the new arrangement meant recycling, food and garden organics, and green waste resource recovery activities would continue.

“This outcome ensures that three materials recovery facilities continue to be available in the Perth metropolitan region, which not only ensures choice is available but also ensures that should one of the facilities not be available for any reason, there is sufficient capacity to ensure the continued processing of recyclable materials,” she said.

“The outcome also secures private sector and government grant funding to undertake the necessary upgrades that will ensure the recycling plant is capable of meeting new resource recovery standards implemented by the Federal Government.”

Canning mayor Patrick Hall said the agreement secured the future of waste management in the region and ensured resource recovery remained a priority well into the future.

Melville mayor Katy Mair said she was pleased the three councils had secured the centre’s long-term future.

“The deal with Re.Group secures Regional Resource Recovery Centre’s processing capacity for recycling, food organics and garden organics and green waste services, and gives long-term certainty to our city of Melville in regards to waste management,” she said.

“This agreement is in line with the city of Melville’s commitment to a clean, green and sustainable city for current and future generations, as it supports the circular economy and optimises waste reduction and resource recovery.”

Fremantle mayor Ben Lawver said it was the start of a new era in waste management.

“This deal provides an environmentally sustainable waste management solution that will continue to serve our community well into the future, delivering the highest standards of resource recovery and meeting our commitment to reducing waste going into landfill,” he said.

Cr Wheatland said the RRRC had set Australian benchmark performance for resource recovery, including 94.6 per cent recovery of FOGO.

Three local governments have struck a long-awaited deal for the long-term future of the Regional Resource Recovery Centre…

[4
64,63,31114,10992,135,124827,44,46,84,8080,45
post-346426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-canning","tag-fremantle","tag-local-government","tag-melville","tag-news","tag-perth","tag-politics","tag-south","tag-wa-news
["GET
