{"id":346821,"date":"2025-12-14T05:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T05:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/346821\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T05:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T05:11:11","slug":"disability-advocates-slam-inaccessible-north-melbourne-tram-stop-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/346821\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability advocates slam inaccessible North Melbourne tram stop upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The planned changes to the North Melbourne tram corridor, released for consultation last Wednesday, included merging some stops and removing 40 car parks to accommodate 25-metre long G-class trams.<\/p>\n<p>The new trams are almost 50 per cent longer than the oldest trams on route 57.<\/p>\n<p>The government proposal considers changes to heritage bluestone kerbing to allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross to the upgraded tram stops in the middle of the road with pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n<p>Bretherton, however, said the absence of elevated platforms meant people with wheelchairs, elderly passengers and parents with prams would remain excluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people can\u2019t come into these spaces, it only leaves one option, which is a car,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just putting more pressure onto other stressed transport systems like taxis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bretherton, an advocate from the Disability Resources Centre, said accessible taxis were already unreliable and hard to find.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Andrew Bretherton at the tram stop outside North Melbourne Town Hall on Errol Street.
