{"id":346978,"date":"2025-12-14T06:56:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T06:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/346978\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T06:56:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T06:56:15","slug":"wish-you-were-here-coalition-mocks-anika-wells-with-taxpayer-funded-travel-postcard-sent-to-voters-in-her-electorate-of-lilley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/346978\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Wish you were here&#8217;: Coalition mocks Anika Wells with &#8216;taxpayer-funded travel&#8217; postcard sent to voters in her electorate of Lilley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Coalition has mocked Communications Minister Anika Wells by sending postcards to voters in her electorate highlighting her use of parliamentary travel entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>The postcard, revealed by The Sunday Telegraph, depicts a collage of Ms Wells\u2019 travel, including photos of her at sporting events and other excursions billed to taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear Taxpayers, I know you\u2019re doing it tough, with high inflation, interest rates and power prices,\u201d the postcard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut thank you for generously funding: $100,000 in airfares for me and my staff to New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The postcard goes on to list other expenses, including a $1,750 dinner in Paris, $3,600 for a trip that included a friend\u2019s birthday in Adelaide, and $2,800 for a Thredbo ski trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for letting my chauffeur-driven cars wait for me while I attended events,\u201d the card read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince Labor was elected, Australia has had the biggest fall in living standards in the developed world. But I\u2019m doing just fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to say thanks for your generosity. Regards, Anika Wells, Labor MP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/15d39d2772c6f86534b46a748ed0539c.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"\u2018Business class flights on us\u2019: Michelle Rowland set to repay Perth flights for family holiday\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Shadow communications minister Melissa McIntosh told Sky News Sunday Agenda that Ms Wells had used excessive taxpayer funds for lavish trips on \u201cmultiple occasions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there has to be changes. There&#8217;s a public expectation and you just need to listen to people right across the country that are pretty unhappy right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if it was that the shoe was on the other foot, I think Labor would be making the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prime Minister needs to step up on this. He said that he\u2019s just following the rules, yet we&#8217;ve heard that the rules were changed just before the last election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/news\/nsw\/government-quietly-eased-politician-expense-rules-weeks-before-federal-election-was-called\/news-story\/57c133e8cf3e765fc11f15ec6d9bd536\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"57c133e8cf3e765fc11f15ec6d9bd536\" data-tgev-label=\"news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed on Saturday that the Albanese government changed the rules<\/a> to make it easier for politicians to claim taxpayer-funded flights before the May 3 federal election.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Treasurer Jim Chalmers defended ministers\u2019 use of family reunion entitlements on Sunday, telling Sky News the rules were not \u201cset in stone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy colleagues work extremely hard and as I said before from time to time they have utilised these family reunion arrangements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to make judgments about others. Everyone&#8217;s responsibility, including mine, is to adhere to the rules. Those rules are not set in stone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom time to time we seek advice on making sure that they meet community standards. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s happened on this occasion.
