At least nine people have been killed when two gunmen carried out a mass shooting at Sydney\u2019s Bondi Beach<\/a>, sending a shockwave across Australia, officials say.<\/p>\n

\u201cA police operation is ongoing after a public place shooting by two men at Bondi Beach earlier today,\u201d a statement from the New South Wales police said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cTen people have been confirmed dead, including a man believed to be one of the shooters. The second alleged shooter is in a critical condition. At this time, a further 11 people are reported to be injured, two of which are police officers,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

A number of suspicious items located in the vicinity were also being examined by specialist officers, police said.<\/p>\n

In a statement,\u00a0Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes in Bondi \u201cshocking and distressing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Albanese said he had spoken to the federal police commissioner and the New South Wales premier on the situation, and was in touch with them for further information.<\/p>\n

Footage aired by Al Jazeera showed a bystander tackling one of the suspects and snatching his gun. The suspect then walks away.<\/p>\n

In the same video, another armed man is seen on a bridge, some 50-100 metres (160-330 feet) away, shooting towards the bystander.<\/p>\n

Camilo Diaz, a 25-year-old student from Chile, recounted hearing a long series of gunshots as the attack unfolded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was shocking. It felt like 10 minutes of just bang, bang, bang,\u201d he told the AFP news agency at the scene, adding: \u201cIt seemed like a powerful weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that a Chanukah by the Sea event had begun at a playground near the northern end of the beach when the attack occurred.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster spoke to a witness who described seeing two black-clad armed men standing on a bridge, shooting at crowds who had gathered for the event.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, speaking at an event in Jerusalem, Israel\u2019s President Isaac Herzog condemned the \u201ccruel\u201d shooting attack, which he said targeted Hanukkah celebrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur sisters and brothers in Sydney, Australia, have been attacked by vile terrorists in a very cruel attack on Jews who went to light the first candle of Hanukkah,\u201d Herzog said, speaking at an event at his residence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe repeat our alerts time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism which is plaguing Australian society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

An Australian Islamic organisation condemned the Bondi Beach shooting as a \u201chorrific\u201d act of violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those who witnessed or were affected by this deeply traumatic attack,\u201d the Australian National Imams Council said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a moment for all Australians, including the Australian Muslim community, to stand together in unity, compassion, and solidarity,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

Australian opposition leader Sussan Ley also expressed her grief, condemning what she called \u201chateful violence\u201d that had struck \u201d \u201cas our Jewish community came together\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a celebration of peace and hope for the future, severed by hate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who ran towards the danger, everyday Australians, our police and paramedics are heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n

A nation stunned<\/p>\n

Reporting from Sydney, journalist Danielle Robertson said the attack had sent shockwaves across Australia.<\/p>\n

Gun violence in crowded public spaces was extremely rare in Australia, particularly in an area like Bondi Beach, which is heavily policed, she said.<\/p>\n

Following the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Australia introduced strict national gun laws, and since then has largely avoided mass public shooting incidents.<\/p>\n
