He’s done everything asked of him in Melbourne.

“The pathway they gave him and the development was next level, so he will be forever grateful. He didn’t really want to leave, but at the end of the day you do all this to play first grade.

“There was all this background around Cameron, because Melbourne had kind of said to me ‘we don’t want Cameron to go, but if Perth is an option when they come in’,”

Bunnies stars getting fighting fit! | 00:19

“So there was all that in the background, but at the end of the day I’d been negotiating with clubs for a one-year.”

There was a very real possibility Pezet could have once again returned to the Storm in 2027 — until a turning point came during the 2025 finals series.

“We thought one year on loan for Jonah and then he’d come back to Melbourne, then when he played against the Bulldogs in the finals and got man of the match,” Anasta explained.

“We kind of sat around and said ‘he’s ready now’ and if it’s going to be this situation now, in 12 months it’s probably going to be the same.

“We just couldn’t do that any longer, then we made the decision we’d look to go somewhere.”

The Eels were met with widespread criticism after Pezet’s one-year deal was announced.

Fans believed the rising halfback was simply using Jason Ryles and the Parramatta club as a stepping stone before his long-term future in Brisbane began.

However, Anasta revealed it was the Eels who came to the table with the short-term deal — with several young guns waiting in the wings.

Joash Papalii is one contender to take the No.6 jersey in 2027, while young guns Lincoln Fletcher and Lorenzo Talataina have both been earmarked for big things.

“Parra didn’t offer a long-term deal. It may have been there if I pressed it but when Zac (was released), it freed up some money,” Anasta said.

“Then that’s when the conversation reopened about a year at Parra and then back to Melbourne. Then the conversation around Brisbane came in.

Jonah Pezet’s contract situation was met with heavy criticism.Source: Getty Images

“From my opinion on the inside is the players they have coming through are exceptional talents, but are they ready right now?

“You’ve got a ready-made (playmaker) there and a team that is on the improve, and the thing that I know that others don’t is you look at players and what they bring to a club on the field but off it.

“He is the ultimate professional, and trains his arse off and brings those standards from Melbourne, Rylesy knows that.

“If you put all the emotions aside, he is going to be better for the club in my opinion.”

League legend Michael Ennis echoed Anasta’s opinion, and he also believed a change of scenery will only benefit Pezet’s development.

“It’s exciting for all parties, I suppose the only downside of it is if he succeeds so well with Mitch that a long-term future at Parramatta is not there,” Ennis said.

“For their fans, it’s been heartache for 30-odd years trying to win that premiership. You think of that spine, Iongi was outstanding and you throw him in with Mitch.

“Mitch hasn’t played a lot of club footy over the past two years, but when he has they have been a different side. He is absolutely elite.

“So to spend that time even just for Jonah’s development, sometimes when you are in a club for so long you can fall into ‘that’s just how it’s done’.

“So he’s been with Munster and Hughes for so long in the Melbourne way, that you sometimes can fall into that habit of ‘that’s how it’s done’.

“Well it’s not, you can skin a cat many ways and the way Parramatta play is a lot different to how the Melbourne Storm play.

Officials face bans over Katoa injuries | 00:42

MORE NRL NEWS

NOV 1 LIVE: Roosters sign Manly star long-term; Bears’ card in Tino sweepstakes

‘WHY I HAD CLAUSES’: Tigers’ infighting could cost them three best juniors and Luai

DRAGONS STATE OF PLAY: Tough Flanagan truth amid deeply flawed roster

“So I think for his growth and development it is huge.”

Meanwhile, the Broncos have a ready-made spine for the foreseeable future in Pezet, Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam.

However, the future of veteran halfback Adam Reynolds remains uncertain, with the 35-year-old declaring his time in the NRL could extend beyond the 2026 season.

Reynolds is yet to make the final call on his future, but should he want to play on, it’s unlikely the Broncos can accommodate him due to salary cap pressures and Pezet’s arrival in 2027.

“When you look at Brisbane and the spine they’ve got there. the way that they played and even though Adam is saying he wants to play on, he is coming to the back-end of his career,” Anasta said.

“For us, the opportunity to play up there. Reece Walsh, Ezra Mam and they have just won a premiership and I think his style would suit those players.

“Jonah’s defence is really good and his kicking game is exceptional and he is more of a game manager, I think that really compliments those other two players who have great X-factor.

“It was a hard one, but at the end of the day I said ‘why don’t we just keep the one year at Parra?’. You get to play alongside Mitchell Moses, they are on the rise.

“He’s good mates with Rylesy, they talk regularly.
