Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The board initially sought to return the 8-foot-6-inch statue \u2014 which has had several homes in the City of Brotherly Love since it was created by artist A. Thomas Schomberg in 1980 \u2014 to Stallone, the outlet said.<\/p>\n<p>But the panel later reconsidered \u2014  and the actor was all in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn response to the strong and heartfelt feedback from the public, Mr. Stallone has graciously decided that we will no longer move forward with the statue swap,\u201d Valeire V. Gay, the city\u2019s chief cultural officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/rocky-statue-philadelphia-art-museum-steps-top-20251210.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis outcome reflects our shared commitment to listen deeply to the community and doing what is best for both the art and the people who cherish it,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>Sly Stallone and his daughter at the Rocky Balboa statue atop the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum in 1982. AP<\/p>\n<p>The steps outside the Philadelphia Art Museum became part of the franchise after the 1976 Oscar winning debut.<\/p>\n<p>The original \u201cRocky\u201d flick was a surprise low-budget Academy Award winner in 1976, launching a lucrative and popular six-movie franchise for Stallone. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the statue\u2019s popularity among movie buffs, art purists questioned whether the statue belonged outside a museum with a slew of art treasures by many of the great masters.<\/p>\n<p>Some sports purists have also pushed instead for a statue of real-life Philly boxing icon Joe Frazier.<\/p>\n<p>The bronze Rocky has been moved several times, with metal footprints left to mark where it once stood \u2014 although it has returned on a few occasions, including for the movie \u201cMannequin\u201d in 1987 and for the Tom Hanks hit, \u201cPhiladelphia\u201d in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The statue also made an appearance at the spot for 1990\u2019s \u201cRocky V.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The steps outside the Philadelphia Art Museum, the ocasional home of Rocky Balboa\u2019s iconic 8-foot-6 statue. Samuel B. \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting last week, Creative Philadelphia\u2019s board voted 3-1 with two abstentions to temporarily put Balboa back on top, and is expected to be part of an exhibit titled \u201cRising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments,\u201d which is due to run from April to August, the Inquirer said. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, two other cast copies of the statue were created over the years \u2014 but it\u2019s the original Rocky that has caused such a stir in the Pennsylvania city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rocky Balboa is back on top.
