data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kristen Phillips<\/a>, USA Cycling certified coach and owner of the Art of Cycling. \u201cIn the context of a human body on a bike, there\u2019s three points of contact: the hands, the sit bones, and the feet,\u201d she says. If you experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a43238564\/causes-hand-numbness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a43238564\/causes-hand-numbness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"numbness\" data-node-id=\"29.3\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">numbness<\/a> or discomfort at any of these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a64645170\/use-discomfort-to-adjust-bike-fit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a64645170\/use-discomfort-to-adjust-bike-fit\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"contact points\" data-node-id=\"29.5\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contact points<\/a> when riding for more than 10 miles, this could be an indication your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a20036352\/bike-fit-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/skills-tips\/a20036352\/bike-fit-0\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bike fit\" data-node-id=\"29.7\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bike fit<\/a> is off, says Phillips. It could also be the reason why you cut a ride short.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To go the distance, Phillips suggests dialing in your bike fit, and more specifically, paying attention to the width of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a20025529\/how-to-buy-road-bike-drop-bars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a20025529\/how-to-buy-road-bike-drop-bars\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"handlebar\" data-node-id=\"30.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">handlebar<\/a>, saddle width and height, and shoe size. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In terms of the width of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/g20041941\/what-to-look-for-in-your-bicycles-handlebars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/g20041941\/what-to-look-for-in-your-bicycles-handlebars\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"handlebar\" data-node-id=\"31.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">handlebar<\/a>, it should come close to matching the width of your shoulders. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To find the best saddle for you, measure the width of your sit bones, which you can do at your local bike shop if they have the measuring tool to do so. Keep in mind, if  your saddle is too-wide or too-narrow for your sit bones, this can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a46677988\/bike-seat-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a46677988\/bike-seat-pain\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bike seat pain\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bike seat pain<\/a>, especially  on a long ride, says Phillips. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To find an ideal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a20022857\/bike-fit-saddle-height\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a20022857\/bike-fit-saddle-height\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"saddle height\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">saddle height<\/a>, sit on the seat and move one pedal to the bottom of the pedal stroke (about the 6 o\u2019clock position). According to 2023 Strava data, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43031175\/average-cycling-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43031175\/average-cycling-speed\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"average cycling speed\" data-node-id=\"37.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">average cycling speed<\/a> for leisure rides completed on pavement was 14.1 mph, and average distance for those rides was 19.2 miles. Leisure dirt rides were slower and shorter, on average: 8.6 mph and 10.6 miles. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"38\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A simple way to determine how long it would take you to ride a particular distance is dividing the distance by your average speed in miles per hour (mph), says Phillips.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Estimating how long it will take you to complete your goal distance is important because it plays into your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20011394\/how-to-fuel-on-rides-of-every-length\/#how-to-fuel-short-rides\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20011394\/how-to-fuel-on-rides-of-every-length\/#how-to-fuel-short-rides\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"nutrition\" data-node-id=\"39.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nutrition<\/a>\u2014especially if you plan to ride for more than three hours.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you\u2019re going for a short ride (one hour or less) then you don\u2019t need to worry about fueling preride because you likely have enough energy stored. But you want to make sure you\u2019re hydrated, so bring water or potentially a low-carb electrolyte drink with you. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20011394\/how-to-fuel-on-rides-of-every-length\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20011394\/how-to-fuel-on-rides-of-every-length\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rides\" data-node-id=\"41.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rides<\/a> lasting  more than one hour, you\u2019ll need to pack a bottle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a62748686\/lemon-water-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a62748686\/lemon-water-health-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"water\" data-node-id=\"41.3\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">water<\/a> or an electrolyte drink and make sure you\u2019re consuming 30 to 60 grams of carbs per hour\u2014on the higher end if you\u2019re going for more than three hours.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"42\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Phillips recommends you always pack an extra bar,  just in case, regardless of how long you think you\u2019ll ride.  <\/p>\n<p>How to Design Your Workout Plan to Increase Your Cycling Distance<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you aren\u2019t currently riding the average cycling distance for your age group, but want to, up your game by following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a46095845\/best-cycling-training-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a46095845\/best-cycling-training-plans\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"structured training plan\" data-node-id=\"44.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">structured training plan<\/a>, like our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a45486006\/beginner-base-training-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a45486006\/beginner-base-training-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"base building\" data-node-id=\"44.3\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">base building<\/a> training plan, to increase your cycling distance, just as you would to improve your speed or endurance. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you want the most success with the least amount of trial and error, Phillips recommends you find a periodized training plan, particularly one structured around a time and distance goal you\u2019re trying to reach like riding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a42449209\/8-week-50-mile-training-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a42449209\/8-week-50-mile-training-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"50-miler\" data-node-id=\"45.1\" class=\"body-link css-3pgz4h emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">50-miler<\/a> in three hours.
