{"id":349156,"date":"2025-12-15T08:15:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T08:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/349156\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T08:15:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T08:15:07","slug":"troubled-louvre-museum-in-paris-faces-disruption-as-unions-call-strike-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/349156\/","title":{"rendered":"Troubled Louvre museum in Paris faces disruption as unions call strike | Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trade unions at the crisis-hit Louvre museum in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/paris\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paris<\/a> will begin a strike on Monday to demand urgent renovations and staffing increases, and to protest against a rise in ticket prices for most non-EU visitors, including British and American tourists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The world\u2019s most-visited museum \u2013 which has had a difficult few months after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/10\/louvre-thieves-evaded-police-with-30-seconds-to-spare-investigation-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jewel heist<\/a>, a damaging water leak and safety fears over a gallery ceiling \u2013 could face days of partial or total closure at one of its busiest times of the year if many of its 2,100-strong workforce vote to continue striking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The museum is still reeling from the theft on 19 October, when a four-person gang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/20\/louvre-museum-robbery-thieves-stolen-jewellery\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raided the museum<\/a> during daylight hours, stealing an estimated \u20ac88m (\u00a377m) of French crown jewels in seven minutes before fleeing on scooters. Four men have been arrested and placed under formal investigation, but the jewels have not been found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In November, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/07\/water-leak-in-the-louvre-damages-hundreds-of-works-museum-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">water leak<\/a> damaged 300 to 400 journals, books and documents in the Egyptian department. A gallery housing nine rooms containing ancient Greek ceramics was then closed because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/17\/louvre-closes-gallery-structural-repairs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fears about ceiling safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">All three trade unions at the Louvre \u2013 the CGT, Sud and CFDT \u2013 announced a rolling strike, saying: \u201cStaff feel today like they are the last bastion before collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They said the jewel robbery had shed light on years of difficulties, staff cuts and state underinvestment at the museum, which had 8.7 million visitors last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The unions said it was discriminatory that the Louvre was raising ticket prices by 45% for visitors from outside the European economic area to raise revenues to fund structural improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">People from countries including the US, Britain and China, which represent some of the highest numbers of visitors to the museum, will have to pay \u20ac32 to get in from January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe see this as an unacceptable discrimination,\u201d said Christian Galani, a CGT union official representing Louvre workers. \u201cWorst still, these visitors would have to pay more to see a dilapidated museum, where they can\u2019t access the whole collection because we are chronically lacking staff and rooms are regularly closed off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said it was an \u201cabsolute scandal\u201d to make visitors of certain nationalities \u201cpay for years of accumulated failings\u201d at a museum whose collection was made up of works from across the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt goes against the universality of culture and the idea of equal access,\u201d Galani said. \u201cFor example, this will impact British tourists, yet if I go to the British Museum, it\u2019s free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Unions are concerned about staffing and working conditions after 200 jobs have been cut since 2015 \u2013 many in security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galani, who works in the museum\u2019s security control room at night, said of the strike action: \u201cWe are so exasperated; this is the only way left to make ourselves heard. Problems have accumulated for years and the robbery has brought it all to light. There has been neglect of both building renovation and security measures to protect the collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last month, France\u2019s state auditor said security upgrades had been carried out at a \u201cwoefully inadequate pace\u201d and the museum had prioritised \u201chigh-profile and attractive operations\u201d instead of protecting itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guy Tubiana, a senior police officer and security adviser, who took part in an investigation ordered by the culture ministry after the jewel robbery, told senators he was \u201cstunned\u201d by what he had discovered at the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere was a succession of malfunctions that led to catastrophe but I never would have thought the Louvre could have so many malfunctions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The preliminary investigation ordered by the government revealed \u201ca chronic underestimation\u201d of the risks of a break-in and \u201cunderinvestment in security measures\u201d, the culture minister, Rachida Dati, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Philippe Jost, who headed the rebuild of Paris\u2019s fire-damaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/notre-dame\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Notre-Dame cathedral<\/a>, is to undertake a study next month into a \u201cdeep reorganisation\u201d of the Louvre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Louvre director, Laurence des Cars, as well as unions, had warned repeatedly before the break-in about conditions inside the museum and the cost of maintaining the vast former royal palace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In January, she said visiting the overcrowded building had become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2025\/jan\/28\/we-wont-come-again-dazed-visitors-fed-up-with-overcrowded-louvre-paris\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cphysical ordeal\u201d<\/a> and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2025\/jan\/28\/mona-lisa-to-be-given-special-place-in-renovated-louvre-says-emmanuel-macron\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major new project<\/a> to build a new museum entrance and give the Mona Lisa, the world\u2019s most famous portrait, its own room.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Trade unions at the crisis-hit Louvre museum in Paris will begin a strike on Monday to demand urgent&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":349157,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[449,458,459,64,63,460,134],"class_list":{"0":"post-349156","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-arts-and-design","8":"tag-arts","9":"tag-arts-and-design","10":"tag-artsanddesign","11":"tag-au","12":"tag-australia","13":"tag-design","14":"tag-entertainment"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/349156","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=349156"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/349156\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/349157"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=349156"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=349156"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=349156"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
