{"id":349839,"date":"2025-12-15T15:58:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T15:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/349839\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T15:58:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T15:58:08","slug":"richard-cockerill-will-not-lead-georgia-at-rwc-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/349839\/","title":{"rendered":"Richard Cockerill will not lead Georgia at RWC 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/england\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> hooker and coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/richard-cockerill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Cockerill<\/a> has resigned as head coach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/georgia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/black-lion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Lion<\/a> with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p>Cockerill, who turns 55 tomorrow, has been in charge of Georgia since the beginning of the Rugby Europe Men\u2019s Championship 2024, when he replaced Levan Maisashvili.<\/p>\n<p>He won two-thirds of his 21 matches as head coach and led the Lelos to back-to-back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/rugby-europe-championship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rugby Europe Championship<\/a> titles, earning qualification for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/rugby-world-cup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rugby World Cup<\/a> 2027 in the process.<\/p>\n<p>However, all of his 14 wins were against sides that Georgia were expected to beat and the failure to take down a big name led to a growing sense of frustration behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Cockerill cited a difference of opinion with Georgia RU President, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/davit-kacharava\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Davit Kacharava<\/a>, as an underlying factor behind him stepping down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to thank the Georgian Rugby Union for the honour of being the head coach of the Georgian national team and the franchise, the \u2018Black Lions\u2019, for two years. Ioseb Tkemaladze, the former president of the Georgian Rugby Union, invited me and I personally thank him for this opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn April 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/davit-kacharava\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Davit Kacharava<\/a> became the new president of the Georgian Football Federation. He has a different vision for the development of the Georgian national team and I respect his decision. I personally wish him and his team success in their future endeavours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud of my time as head coach of the Georgian national team.
