In a glass-walled office, high up on the umpteenth floor of the HQ of Gobik, Ineos Grenadiers\u2019<\/a> kit supplier, a hotshot designer is smiling at their computer screen. \u201cWe\u2019ve done it,\u201d the designer says, slapping their hand down onto their thigh. \u201cWe\u2019ve broken the internet.\u201d But at what cost?<\/p>\n

The notifications keep counting up, like the score on a boxing machine. Together, Gobik and Ineos have dealt the knockout blow<\/a>. The new kit is the most talked about thing in cycling; fans are sharing images across every social media; no, you don\u2019t get any UCI points for fashion<\/a>, but it\u2019s a big win for the sponsors, whose logos are everywhere.<\/p>\n

What do the comments say? The designer looks back at their screen, and falls into silence. What do they think about the light grey shorts?<\/a> They love them, right? More silence.<\/p>\n

As Jeff Goldblum\u2019s character says in Jurassic Park, \u201cyour scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should\u201d, and from the uproar online, anyone would have thought Ineos and Gobik had just built a terrifying theme park of murderous dinosaurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow, that is truly awful,\u201d one X user responded to the kit announcement, deploying an adjective that would come up again and again. \u201cUnbelievably bad,\u201d another said. Tens of others chimed in: \u201cWorst kit ever, and that\u2019s quite an accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Instagram, the same feelings were echoed \u2013 \u201chorrifying\u201d, \u201can absolute crime\u201d, \u201cG [Geraint Thomas<\/a>] is retired on time\u201d. While on Facebook, users were equally as unforgiving \u2013 \u201cwhite shorts are a big no no,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s not to like about the shorts? Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a> and Lotte Kopecky<\/a> wear all-white from time to time, and they\u2019re supremely popular. Why can\u2019t Ineos do it?<\/p>\n

One Facebook user spelled out the issue plainly: \u201cWhenever a race is dirty or wet your riders will all look like they\u2019ve crapped their pants. They\u2019ll definitely stand out, and not in a good way.\u201d Commenters on Cycling Weekly\u2019s Instagram post were more euphemistic about it: \u201cWith those shorts, they\u2019ll be streaks ahead,\u201d wrote one. Another simply said: \u201cmarginal stains.\u201d<\/p>\n

From an hour of social media trawling, Cycling Weekly found no comments that parroted the adjectives from the kit’s press release: sophisticated, functional and memorable.<\/p>\n

However, among all the green-faced, vomiting emojis, some fans leapt to Ineos\u2019s defence. \u201cBold design, should make the riders easier to spot,\u201d said one X user. Another praised the kit as being \u201cclean and simple with a good colour palette \u2013 it will stand out in the blue peloton\u2026 shame people prefer the dullness of kits like Groupama or Decathlon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite honestly, best kit in years,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n

As always with the internet, it was a tale of two sides. Through it all, there was one comment that summed up the split in opinion best: \u201cIt\u2019s actually so bad it could become legendary.\u201d<\/p>\n

This, perhaps, is where the legacy of the light grey shorts will lie. People loved to hate AG2R\u2019s brown bibs, until they were replaced with a more widely accepted black, and almost instantly the revisionist nostalgia took hold.<\/p>\n

Give it another five years, and the imaginary Gobik designer might be rubbing their hands together once more.<\/p>\n
