(Reuters: Ann Wang)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The United States continues to assist Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defence capabilities and in rapidly building strong deterrent power and leveraging asymmetric warfare advantages which form the foundation for maintaining regional peace and stability,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ministry said the package is at the Congressional notification stage, which is where Congress has a chance to block or alter the sale should it wish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Taiwan has widespread cross-party support in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Pentagon said arms sales serve US national, economic and security interests by supporting Taiwan&#8217;s continuing efforts to modernise its armed forces and to maintain a &#8220;credible defensive capability&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Pushed by the United States, Taiwan has been working to transform its armed forces to be able to wage &#8220;asymmetric warfare&#8221; using mobile, smaller and often cheaper weapons which still pack a targeted punch, like drones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our country will continue to promote defence reforms, strengthen whole-of-society defence resilience, demonstrate our determination to defend ourselves, and safeguard peace through strength,&#8221; Taiwan presidential office spokesperson Karen Kuo said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Taiwan President Lai Ching-te last month announced a $60.6 billion supplementary defence budget to run from 2026 to 2033, saying there was &#8220;no room for compromise on national security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">China&#8217;s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in black suits stands next to army soldiers.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4f80994e817e7215b2c41517b77d9b0d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te (centre) has announced a budget to defend itself against the rising threat from China.
