The South Australian Government has released a first look at the\u00a0Greg Norman\u2013designed redevelopment of North Adelaide Golf Course, confirming the project will remove\u00a0585 trees\u00a0while leaving culturally significant Aboriginal land untouched.<\/p>\n

South Australia Premier\u00a0Peter Malinauskas\u00a0unveiled the plans at Adelaide Oval alongside\u00a0Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland and\u00a0North Adelaide Golf Course president Kevin Naughton, with the designs now on public display during the third Ashes cricket Test. <\/p>\n

A key element of the redesign is the protection of\u00a0Possum Park \/ Pirltawardli (Park 1), which currently houses the Par-3 course. Malinauskas said the area and its surrounds are considered a \u201cquarantined\u201d zone due to the risk of disturbing Aboriginal remains and are protected under the\u00a0Aboriginal Heritage Act.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a very strict legislative process that dictates the way those [Aboriginal Heritage] applications operate and that was done quite independently of me, as it should be, but effectively there was engagement, and that decision was made clear and easily accommodated,\u201d Malinauskas said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is an active engagement with organisations like KYAC [Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation] to make sure this is done as sensibly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Premier\u2019s comments follow concerns raised earlier this year by\u00a0Kaurna elder Tim Agius, who said any world-class development should not come \u201cat the expense of our people\u201d. The\u00a018-hole championship course, designed by former LIV Golf CEO\u00a0Norman, will align with\u00a0championship standards and include a\u00a0driving range on neighbouring Park 27A, a short course and practice facilities. A putt-putt course for children has also been flagged.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Australians of all levels of golfing experience \u2013 and those without it \u2013 will be able to enjoy the high level of amenity provided by this investment in our park lands,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Importantly, the course will remain\u00a0public, with no permanent fencing planned. A\u00a0differential pricing model\u00a0\u2013 charging visitors more than locals \u2013 will apply, enabled through special legislation passed earlier this year. <\/p>\n

Sutherland\u00a0said the investment into a public course would position South Australia as a national leader in golf, noting that\u00a0$10.3 billion\u00a0in household spending was recorded across Australian golf in the past 12 months. <\/p>\n
