England captain Ben Stokes is under a mystery injury cloud after a punishing Day 3<\/a> of the third Ashes<\/a> Test.<\/p>\n

Stokes was not out overnight heading into Friday morning\u2019s first session at the Adelaide Oval and made a positive start to the day alongside tailender Jofra Archer with the bat.<\/p>\n

The pair put on 106 for the ninth wicket \u2014 England\u2019s second largest partnership of the series \u2014 before Stokes was bowled by Mitchell Starc and the wheels started falling off.<\/p>\n

The tourists were bowled out shortly after and headed into the field trailing by 85.<\/p>\n

Having bowled 19 overs \u2014 albeit without a wicket \u2014 in the first innings, Stokes loomed as a major key for England if they hoped to bowl the Aussies out before the game slipped too far away.<\/p>\n

But the England skipper didn\u2019t bowl a single one of the 66 overs his side sent down on Day 3, and started to look a bit ginger in the field towards the end of the final session.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo Stokes today for England. I wonder if that\u2019s a problem going to Melbourne,\u201d David Lloyd said on Channel 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s looked alright, he\u2019s been moving around. I know he went off the field because he banged his head on one of the practice pitches. But he hasn\u2019t bowled at all. He would definitely have been involved (if he weren\u2019t injured) \u2014 we\u2019ve not seen him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ricky Ponting added: \u201cWell, he can\u2019t be right; he wouldn\u2019t be holding himself back in a moment like this, series on the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Aussie captain Lisa Sthalaker suggested there might have been an adductor issue for Stokes, but it remains unclear if that is accurate and what exactly is wrong.<\/p>\n

He looked particularly proppy after chasing a ball that raced to the boundary off the bat of Alex Carey late in the day.<\/p>\n

Watching the replay of that chase, Ponting was certain something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does look to be moving quite freely there until he starts to slow down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good solid chase until just there, and then there\u2019s a couple of shorter strides pulling up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis walk all the way back, it looks like there\u2019s a little limp there. So something\u2019s up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, we\u2019re focusing on that little head knock, but he hadn\u2019t bowled before that anyway. And that was probably 30, 35 overs, maybe even 40 overs into the innings.\u201d<\/p>\n

James Brayshaw added: \u201cSuch a tough cricketer, Ben Stokes, and such an example-setter.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaptain of the team, won\u2019t want to be off the ground. His batting\u2019s been amazing in really trying conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters after the day\u2019s play, England bowling coach Jeetan Patel insisted there was nothing wrong with Stokes, other than tiredness after batting for 198 balls in the first innings.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom what I understand, he\u2019s pretty fit to bowl,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s just pretty knackered and he\u2019s taken a lot out of himself to get through to this point in the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he might be a bit tired and just needs a bit of time to himself right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
