{"id":359333,"date":"2025-12-20T00:08:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T00:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/359333\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T00:08:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T00:08:10","slug":"one-last-push-wawrinka-to-retire-from-tennis-after-2026-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/359333\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;One last push&#8217; \u2013 Wawrinka to retire from tennis after 2026 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stan Wawrinka has announced that 2026 will be his final year before retiring from professional tennis.<\/p>\n<p>Wawrinka is a three-time grand slam champion, triumphing at the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He defeated the then-world number one in all three of those\u00a0finals (Rafael Nadal once, Novak Djokovic twice), while also winning an Olympic gold medal in doubles in 2008, partnering Roger Federer in Beijing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 40-year-old has won 16 ATP Tour-level singles titles, with the most recent coming in his home country at the Geneva Open in 2017, while his last final ended in defeat at the 2023 Croatia Open.<\/p>\n<p>Taking to social media on Friday, Wawrinka confirmed 2026 will be his final season in the sport, writing: &#8220;One last push.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every book needs an ending. It&#8217;s time to write the final chapter of my career as a professional tennis player. 2026 will be my last year on tour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I still want to push my limits and finish this journey on the best note possible. I still have dreams in this sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve enjoyed every part of what tennis has given me, especially the emotions I feel playing in front of you.
