Just the waves on the rocks and the occasional sounds of birds \u2026 It was so beautiful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/soul-search\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soul Search<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Soul Search explores contemporary religion and spirituality from the inside out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 39-year-old wasn&#8217;t sightseeing. She was a contestant on the popular reality TV show, Alone Australia, and was being tested to see how long she could survive entirely by herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The show sees 10 people dropped off into different areas of a remote and unforgiving landscape with limited equipment and no contact with the outside world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This season, the setting was a rugged, mountainous region of lutruwita\/Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Contestants are required to film themselves enduring the challenges of their environment (and pass health checks) for as long as possible. (Supplied: SBS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Though Ooms isn&#8217;t a dyed-in-the-wool survivalist \u2014 she left her job as a food safety consultant to appear on the show \u2014 she withstood 70 days in the wild before &#8220;tapping out&#8221;. She finished as second runner-up and was the last woman to leave the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The experience changed her forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Even now, I still have trouble articulating the connection I felt with myself and with the land,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The cameras do not and will not capture it. (Supplied: Corinne Ooms)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her adventurous spirit continued into adulthood, and she backpacked around the world before settling in Tasmania 12 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She says her decision to go on Alone Australia was motivated by self-exploration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;How much do you know about yourself if you keep going through the same routines and don&#8217;t push yourself out of your comfort zone?&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I knew I was going to suffer; I wanted to reach that point and push past it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Ooms was very different from the experienced survivalists the show \u2014 and its US counterpart \u2014 usually attracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I had not done something like this before; this was a brand new experience,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I hadn&#8217;t spent more than five days on my own and probably 10 days out in the wilderness without a phone or technology, so I really didn&#8217;t know what to expect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She never assumed she&#8217;d get particularly far in the competition, even telling her clients she&#8217;d be back soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I really didn&#8217;t expect to last as long as I did \u2014 I thought I&#8217;d be out within a month,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Honing her senses<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At first, Ooms found the demands of the environment \u2014 and the show \u2014 overwhelming. While she had experience with foraging and setting up camp outdoors, being completely self-reliant was a challenge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-06-25\/survival-guide-when-lost-in-australia-outback-tropics-snow\/102509518\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How to survive being lost in Australia<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Could you survive being lost in the alps, the outback or the tropics?\u00a0wo outdoor\u00a0experts and an intrepid trekker reveal their top tips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s frantic when you&#8217;re in a brand new place you&#8217;ve never been to and you&#8217;ve got to quickly build a shelter, keep yourself dry, keep your equipment safe from animals, figure out the landscape and where the best fishing might be, and look for tracks for potential animals to catch,&#8221; she explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then on top of that, you&#8217;re supposed to film X amount of hours per day and talk about what you&#8217;re doing and just have this constant presence of the camera there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She describes herself during her first month of survival as an &#8220;excited, chaotic mess&#8221;, regularly injuring herself on rocks and her equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was so clumsy because I wasn&#8217;t connected with what was going on,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That changed over time \u2014 slowing down, being present, not being in this mad, hectic rush.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gradually, she attuned her senses to her new home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You get to know very intimately the different trees and plants and streams and the landscape and the smells,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Because you&#8217;re not bombarded with stimulation, your senses become heightened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You start to notice things you never noticed before, like the dew drops that form on a spider web with the light reflecting off it \u2026 When storms come, you can hear the birds change their tune and you can smell [it] coming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with dark hair in a ponytail, wearing a wetsuit, runs a knife over the scales of a silver fish on a rock.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/9b8200b6cf86c5a437a0c02dd168201f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Catching food wasn&#8217;t new to Ooms, but the reality show presented new challenges. (Supplied: Corinne Ooms)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In her darkest moments, Ooms was surprised by what she missed the most.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I struggled with lack of people far more than I expected to,&#8221; she recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The cravings for physical contact and emotional connection were just as strong, if not stronger, than [cravings for] food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There were so many times I thought, &#8216;Oh, this is so cool, I wish I could share this with someone&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tangles with wildlife<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Throughout her journey on the show, Ooms faced challenges from local critters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Audiences watched her gripe at Quentin the quoll, &#8220;an unwanted visitor that kept crossing boundaries&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While contestants were banned from hunting quolls, Ooms had plenty of run-ins with Quentin, including inside her makeshift bed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A small furry brown mammal with white spots and a pointed nose walks in front of a tarpaulin.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/05064e1f0a7b73ceca7ec496c9cf1fa0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Quentin the quoll was a pest before he became a companion. (Supplied: SBS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I had to drive him out several times, but he did kind of become a friend that I ended up talking to and looking forward to his visits,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When the storms came, all the animals left, and he obviously went and followed the wallabies. It was really lonely not having his daily visits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her other struggle centred around her unwillingness to kill an animal for meat, which was put to the test when she trapped a wallaby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As someone who eats meat, it was something I always knew I should do \u2026 It was overdue, but a huge bridge to cross,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Killing that wallaby was traumatising. It was so hard, but it was a valuable experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since then, Ooms says &#8220;something has switched in my brain&#8221;, and she is now able to kill and process her chickens at home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/soul-search\/solitude-and-the-ache-for-humans\/102610310\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alone Australia&#8217;s Kate Grarock tells Soul Search about embracing solitude<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Isolation can be hard \u2014 many people fear it \u2014 but some embrace solitude as an opportunity to learn what makes us human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s still hard \u2026 But I&#8217;m glad I&#8217;ve got that struggle within me \u2026 it does give me respect for what it is I&#8217;m eating,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That&#8217;s something she encourages others to seek in their own lives, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are so many barriers to our connection with our food, and that&#8217;s the most simple connection we can have,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It brings so much pleasure to eating, to know where our food comes from and how it&#8217;s made and how it&#8217;s grown, and to actually go and harvest that yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Being happy with less<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ooms puts her success as a survivalist down to her mindset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I went in without the intention of winning,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just thought I&#8217;d make the most of it, have fun, learn about myself, have curiosity, just play in the forest. Coming back, I&#8217;ve cut down on all that,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She&#8217;s now starting a family, and hopes to raise her child to appreciate the simple joys of nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I want that for my child, that ability to grow strong and healthy and competent with their hands and with their mind, comfortable in their own skin and confident in themselves,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I do think a connection with nature gives you a that, and having a caring, nurturing community around you as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve realised how happy I am with less.
