Like many Aussies around the country, one Sydney family recently hauled their Christmas tree<\/a> out of storage with eager anticipation for the festive season. However, when they dragged it into their living room, they quickly realised this year\u2019s celebrations were going to be more unusual \u2014 and stinkier \u2014 than previous years.<\/p>\n

After removing the box from their garage, where it had been stored for months, the family heard something moving around inside. Too \u201cscared to open it themselves\u201d, Ben Dessen, CEO and Director of Hills Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>, told Yahoo News Australia he was called in to investigate.<\/p>\n

When he arrived at their home in Dural, a suburb in the city\u2019s northwest, he noted the cardboard containing the plastic tree<\/a> also had \u201cquite a strong smell\u201d.<\/p>\n

But not even he was prepared for what was hiding inside.<\/p>\n

After cracking open the box, Ben found not one but \u201csix little baby antechinus\u201d \u2014 a rarely seen native marsupial \u2014 scurrying between the green branches.<\/p>\n

A nest appeared to have been crafted inside by the young creatures\u2019 mum, who promptly bolted and hid under the couch.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was certainly a first for me,\u201d Ben told Yahoo News.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a wildlife rescuer, we get calls to help animals<\/a> that find themselves in some pretty unusual places, but I\u2019ve never seen a colony of antechinus living inside a Christmas tree box before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like many Australians, the family had never heard of the animals before, Ben said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I was able to catch all the antechinus, it was a great opportunity to educate the family about these amazing marsupials and how special it was to be able to see them up close,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also posted footage of the discovery online, asking others if they could guess what had been residing inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not what you expect,\u201d he captioned the clip.<\/p>\n

The video shows the wildlife expert race to catch each of the \u201camazing little creatures\u201d, which he noted were quite \u201cquick\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely not the Christmas surprise that this family was expecting tonight,\u201d Ben said.<\/p>\n

What are antechinus?<\/p>\n

Antechinus are members of the dasyurid family, which are carnivorous marsupials and include the Tasmanian devil and quolls, he explained.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve got \u201creally sharp teeth\u201d, pointy snouts and \u201creally round little ears\u201d, which help distinguish them from a common rat or mouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntechinus males only live for roughly 12 months and after maturing and mating, they die from exhaustion,\u201d Ben continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis process is known as semelparity and is common in many Dasyurid species.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to WIRES, there are 10 species of Antechinus in Australia.<\/p>\n

What happened to the baby antechinus?<\/p>\n

Hoping to reunite the babies with their mum, Ben placed them in a nest box overnight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mother ended up coming back, following their calls, and was curled up inside the box with the babies the next morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could then safely relocate the nest box to a garden shed outside, where the family were happy for the antechinus to live as they were away from the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t such good news for the Christmas tree, which \u201chad a very strong odour\u201d and unfortunately had to be thrown out.<\/p>\n
