As homes move more toward places of history, character and irregularity \u2013 rather than newness and uniformity \u2013 vintage quilts have become the clearest expression of the shift. They sit in a useful middle ground for modern homes \u2013 nostalgic and handcrafted, but without fussiness. <\/p>\n

Phoebe Clive, founder of Tinsmiths<\/a>, has used an array of American patchwork quilts in her Herefordshire home<\/a>. \u201cI find quilts so interesting and beautiful,” she says. “Each is non-repeatable and therefore unique.\u201d<\/p>\n

2Olive\"interiorBelle Daughtry<\/p>\n

This elegant colour sits in the spectrum between yellow and green, but unlike its neighbouring primary colours, it has an earthy brown undertone. This muddying of the pigment \u2013 reminiscent of 60s and 70s colour palettes \u2013 is what makes it feel so retro. Try it in a south-facing room for a fresh and uplifting finish.<\/p>\n

3Reupholstering the classics\"countryCath Gratwicke<\/p>\n

More and more people are reupholstering old design classics \u2013 the sort of pieces once considered untouchable \u2013 in recognition that good design can take a personal imprint. <\/p>\n

Interior designer Camilla Clarke of Albion Nord<\/a> says: \u201cAntique chairs and sofas have far more interesting shapes than anything you can buy off the shelf today. Bring them to life by reupholstering in a fresh, light linen or a jewel-coloured velvet for an instant transformation.” <\/p>\n

4Creating collections\"interiorRachel Whiting<\/p>\n

Highly personal collections \u00e0 la shopkeeper Phoebe Clive are edging out generic styling. <\/p>\n

Plates picked up on holiday, antique oddities, colourful glass bottles, shells, or a run of fridge magnets from nowhere glamorous at all carry a specificity that mass decor simply can\u2019t imitate. Grouping them together rather than scattering them around only amplifies the effect.<\/p>\n

5Earthy colours\"rebeccaRebecca Udall<\/p>\n

Earthy tones show no signs of fatiguing in the new year, with popular shades running the gamut from soft clays to mineral browns. <\/p>\n

“Browns have become very, very important\u2026almost becoming a nice substitute to using black, or using charcoal, because it has a little bit of a softer warmth to it,’ says Andrea Magno, director of colour marketing and development at Benjamin Moore<\/a>, who named the rich espresso shade Silhouette<\/a> as their colour of the year 2026. <\/p>\n

Homes are drifting away from anything that looks too pristine and instead possess the relaxed irregularity that comes from a mix of things \u2013 old and new, plain and patterned, vintage<\/a> and high street. The mix is intentional but not manicured, and the whole thing absorbs the untidiness of real life with ease.<\/p>\n

Internal doors can disappear into the architecture of a room, much like ceilings or skirting boards. <\/p>\n

But swapping generic designs for something a bit more noticeable \u2013 such as the grand reclaimed doors in the primary bathroom of this Sussex manor<\/a> \u2013 brings a sense of weight and quality. It\u2019s a simple intervention with almost disproportionate results. <\/p>\n

8The next sink skirt\"woodenBelle Daughtry<\/p>\n

After the popularity of frilled sink skirts<\/a>, a quieter variation is emerging. Thin curtains hung on the inside of cabinet doors introduce a small amount of movement and texture, but the overall effect is more restrained than the full-skirt treatment. <\/p>\n

In kitchens<\/a> or dining rooms where open shelving can skew chaotic, this small intervention offers your pots and pans a bit of modesty. <\/p>\n

9Internal windows\"kitchenBrent Darby<\/p>\n

Internal windows improve the flow of natural light around a home, and offer an enticing peek into neighbouring rooms. “Removing walls is no longer the only option when it comes to re-working our living spaces,” says Gisela Lancaster, Head of Sales at Sofololgy<\/a>. <\/p>\n

“Internal Crittall doors and look-throughs into other spaces are a clever way to create cosy areas<\/a>. The secret is to ensure that each space retains its own character, whilst the overall design feels connected and coherent.”<\/p>\n

10Tonal decorating\"interiorStudio Duggan<\/p>\n

If 2025 leaned into confident colour, 2026 is about committing to one hue and working within its boundaries. Tonal decorating \u2013 layering varying strengths, tints and temperatures of the same colour across an entire room \u2013 creates a space that feels put together without being over-styled. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s often done with neutrals, but it\u2019s just as effective with colour \u2013 sage into olive, rust into peach, navy into slate and so on.<\/p>\n
