Nathan Lyon\u2019s new nickname has been outed: \u201cFilthy\u201d, or \u201cPhil\u201d for short.<\/p>\n

The Australian off-spinner, generally called \u201cGarry\u201d throughout his career in honour of footy great Garry Lyon, landed the new moniker after declaring he was \u201cabsolutely filthy\u201d<\/a> about being dropped for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey and slip fielder Marnus Labuschagne were heard calling him \u201cFilthy\u201d and \u201cPhil\u201d during day four of the third Test in Adelaide. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think he might have used the word last week, didn\u2019t he?\u201d Carey said after play.<\/p>\n

Lyon\u2019s full comments about Brisbane were as follows.<\/p>\n

\u201c(I\u2019m) absolutely filthy,\u201d he said to Channel Seven.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t do anything about it, so I hope I can play my role in making sure I get the guys ready, and do whatever I can to make sure that we get the right result here.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, I haven\u2019t really sat down with Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald) or George yet. I\u2019m letting things settle down in my own head, and trying to make sure that I\u2019m, as I said, doing whatever I can to make sure the guys out in the middle representing Australia do the right thing and get the right result for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has returned to bowl beautifully in Adelaide, passing Glenn McGrath as Australia\u2019s second-highest Test wicket taker after claiming his 564th scalp, and has the Aussies on the brink of a winning 3-0 series lead.<\/p>\n
