{"id":361356,"date":"2025-12-20T23:25:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T23:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/361356\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T23:25:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T23:25:10","slug":"retired-fremantle-champions-first-post-afl-move-revealed-afl-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/361356\/","title":{"rendered":"Retired Fremantle champion&#8217;s first post-AFL move revealed &#8211; AFL News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohanger.com\/games-centre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"305\" height=\"40\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" style=\"float:right;\" class=\"play-games-banner\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ZeroHanger_GamesCentre.png.webp.webp\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Retired Fremantle champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohanger.com\/afl\/players\/michael-walters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Walters<\/a> has secured a role within the performance pathways and development arm of WA Football following his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohanger.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFL<\/a> career.<\/p>\n<p>The 34-year-old has been appointed as the Indigenous and multicultural relationship manager, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohanger.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFL<\/a> assisting in the process to have Walters join the team.<\/p>\n<p>Walters, who will officially begin the role in January, joins WA Football after 17 seasons with Fremantle, tallying 239 games and 35 goals.<\/p>\n<p>He would lead the Dockers&#8217; goalkicking in five separate seasons, as well as being selected in the All-Australian team in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>During his career, Walters emerged as a role model for Indigenous players coming through the system across the country, with his standing recognised with captaincy of the Indigenous All Stars earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really looking forward to getting started and helping out WA footy and the talented players where I can from a support aspect, making sure we leave no stone left unturned from the day you step into the program to the day you step out of the program,&#8221; Walters said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m keen to play an important role in guiding more Indigenous and multicultural men and women to play the game that they love at a higher level, while enjoying their own individual journeys with them on-field but more importantly off-field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-158349\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"Michael Walters poses for a photo in the 2025 Indigenous All-Stars playing guernsey.
