(Supplied: Scott Jon McCook)<\/p>\n<p>Changing with the season<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Curtin University conservation biologist Angus Lawrie said a lot of the lakes completely dried out over summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you go to them in \u2026 July to September, there&#8217;ll be a really deep blue colour when they&#8217;re a bit fuller with water,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As they start drying out, they really do start changing into these yellows, greens, browns, purples, orange and pinks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial shot of various lakes in different shades of pink and white.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c54de33a3e1cb85f9e0c3569fa02e247\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pink lakes in areas including near Esperance and Northampton are popular tourist attractions. (Supplied: Scott Jon McCook)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Lawrie said the unique bacterial and phytoplankton communities were responsible for the colour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Why carrots are orange is the same reason why salt lakes are pink,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s because they&#8217;re producing a protective coating basically to protect them from the sun called beta carotene.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Living spaces<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Lawrie said native brine shrimp, Paratemia, were among the animals that were able to survive in the harsh environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These are aquatic animals and they&#8217;re basically just sitting in the dirt as eggs, waiting for the next time that it rains, and that might not be every year,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That might be every other year and in really extreme cases we certainly see that these animals can tolerate up to decades at least of being dry in the dirt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man standing in front of salt lake wearing blue shirt and grey pants with mountain in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/d5b9ecd3c55219dca162c48eba4646c2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Angus Lawrie researched salt lakes in the Wheatbelt for his PhD.
