The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly one of multiple teams interested in signing third baseman Alex Bregman this winter.<\/p>\n
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal<\/a> reported Saturday that Blue Jays officials “have been in recent contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras.”<\/p>\n “Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or [Bo] Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than [Kyle] Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left,” Rosenthal wrote.<\/p>\n Rosenthal’s report comes after ESPN’s Jeff Passan<\/a> said in a Friday appearance on The Michael Kay Show<\/a> the Blue Jays were “very much in the mix” for Bregman.<\/p>\n “I think the Blue Jays understand chemistry matters, and leadership matters, and I think they benefitted greatly last year from the team that they had one the field,” Passan said. “And Alex Bregman… he’s regarded as a very, very good clubhouse guy, and somebody who could be a leader for that team going forward.”<\/p>\n The Blue Jays have been tied to an interest in re-signing Bichette, who previously played shortstop for the franchise but who MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand<\/a> recently reported has told teams he’s willing to move to second base.<\/p>\n Whether the Jays ultimately land one of these infield free agents could impact where Ernie Clement and Addison Barger play next season. <\/p>\n Clement would likely move to second base if the club acquires Bregman but remain at third in the case of a Bichette signing, per Rosenthal. Barger could then slide to right field, Rosenthal noted.<\/p>\n In order to bring in either player, however, the Blue Jays might need to win a bidding war with multiple other clubs.<\/p>\n The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks have also been tied<\/a> to an interest in Bregman, who Passan<\/a> recently reported is seeking six years on his next deal.<\/p>\n Should the Blue Jays ultimately beat out these other clubs for Bregman, however, the slugger could help make up for the potential absence of Bichette from the Blue Jays lineup.
