"NHLConnor McDavid’s future with Oilers in doubt as contract extension talks remain at a standstill (Imagn Images) With Connor McDavid entering the final year of his blockbuster eight-year deal, the Edmonton Oilers find themselves walking a tightrope. The franchise’s most valuable asset— and arguably the NHL’s best player— is eligible for an extension, but as of now, no formal movement has taken place. Fans, media, and league insiders are watching closely, yet Oilers management is taking a patient, calculated approach as McDavid continues to call the shots.

Connor McDavid’s contract future keeps Oilers Nation on edge as extension talks stay quiet

Oilers general manager Stan Bowman, who stepped into the spotlight during a recent interview with CHED 880, acknowledged that contract discussions are still in the “early stages.” And while that might sound like a cause for concern, Bowman emphasized that giving McDavid space has been part of the strategy. “I’ve had really good conversations with Judd Moldaver [McDavid’s agent] since the season ended,” Bowman said. “I’ve tried to give Connor his space, and I think that it’s important. A lot of this is respecting the athlete and their timeline.”This measured approach comes after a grueling season in which McDavid once again put up eye-popping numbers—100 points in the regular season and 33 more in the playoffs— leading Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances. His performance only reaffirms his elite status, and it’s no surprise that the Oilers are ready to make him the NHL’s highest-paid player, with estimates crossing the $17 million mark once the cap rises to $104 million in 2026–27.

Winning is still the priority for Connor McDavid

Despite the looming pressure of free agency in 2026, McDavid’s comments after Edmonton’s Stanley Cup Final loss shed light on what matters most to him. “Winning would be at the top of the list,” he said. “Winning is the most important thing. If I feel there’s a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem.”That sentiment echoes Bowman’s understanding of the situation. “(McDavid is) a huge part of everything we do here,” he added. “I don’t have a timeline update, but I do expect to have some conversations with them soon and hopefully get that wrapped up.”For now, the hockey world waits. McDavid holds the keys, and the Oilers seem determined to do everything they can to keep them in Edmonton— on his terms.
