Australia is sweating on the fitness of Nathan Lyon after the veteran spinner hobbled off the field with a hamstring injury on day five of the Adelaide Ashes Test against England<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lyon was near the rope when he lunged to prevent a boundary at fine leg, looking pretty ginger as he returned to his feet. The 38-year-old immediately signalled for a team medic and hobbled off the field, occasionally grabbing at his hamstring.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was down here on the boundary when it happened,\u201d Australian teammate Marnus Labuschagne told Fox Cricket after the match.<\/p>\n

\u201cI walked over to him and he just said, \u2018I think I\u2019ve done my hammy.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI just patted him on the back, didn\u2019t really have much for him there.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be in a world of emotion today, he\u2019ll be disappointed, but also really happy with what he was able to do for the team this game to win the Ashes for us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout Nathan, I don\u2019t think we get the win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon was later sent for scans, arriving at the hospital in crutches, with Cricket Australia confirming he would take no further part in the match.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow big a moment is this?\u201d former Test wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist said in Fox Cricket commentary.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no… this is a sorry sight for Australia and more so Nathan Lyon. Perhaps a pivotal moment in what could happen today, he\u2019s walking off the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident was reminiscent of Lyon\u2019s calf injury during the 2023 Ashes Test at Lord\u2019s, when he missed the remainder of the series after hurting himself in the outfield. The Australians struggled without their strike tweaker, failing to win a match for the remainder of the tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mind goes back to Lord\u2019s where the calf went and you felt like that was a pivotal moment in that series,\u201d Gilchrist continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a bad image when he realised what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon ripped through England\u2019s middle order on Saturday afternoon, taking three wickets to put the Australians within touching distance of victory at Adelaide Oval.<\/p>\n

If the New South Welshman was unavailable for next week\u2019s Boxing Day Test at the MCG, it would open the door for either Todd Murphy, Matt Kuhnemann or Corey Rocchiccioli to join the Australian squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always played with a front-line spinner, who\u2019s next?\u201d Healy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are we looking at? Who\u2019s next in-line if need be?\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Australian spinner Kerry O\u2019Keeffe: \u201cThey take (Matthew) Kuhnemann to the subcontinent, but is he an option on Australian pitches?\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters during the post-match press conference, Australian captain Pat Cummins declared that Lyon was \u201cirreplaceable\u201d, admitting he may miss the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoesn\u2019t look great. Don\u2019t know yet but seeing someone on crutches doesn\u2019t bode well for a Test (less than) a week away,\u201d Cummins saud on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaz is pretty close to irreplaceable. The ability to make breakthroughs but also the control is really important.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be hard to replace, but we\u2019ve got some guys who\u2019ve already had a taste of international cricket around the traps.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther guys have done really well in domestic cricket.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been one of the benefits of the Sri Lankan tours, even the West Indies and some of these tours where we take a couple of spinners.<\/p>\n
