And maybe not for the better.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000f356pvalkc9eo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than half of the organizations surveyed by the Society for Human Resource Management used AI to recruit workers in 2025. And an estimated third of ChatGPT users <a href=\"https:\/\/openaiglobalaffairs.substack.com\/p\/finding-work-with-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly<\/a> leaned on the OpenAI chatbot to help with their job search.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag819k000q356p4vd60sgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, recent research found that when job seekers use AI during the process, applicants are less likely to be hired. Meanwhile, companies are fielding an increased volume of applications.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000h356pgh9wfedz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ability (for companies) to select the best worker today may be worse due to AI,\u201d said Ana\u00efs Galdin, a Dartmouth researcher who co-authored a study looking at how large language models (LLMs) have impacted cover letters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000i356puxupu27v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Galdin and her co-author, Jesse Silbert at Princeton, analyzed cover letters for tens of thousands of job applications on Freelancer.com, a jobs listing site.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbkcqs10005356p42edbmu4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers found that after the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, the letters all got longer and better-written, but companies stopped putting so much stock in them. That made it harder to distinguish a qualified hire from the rest of the applicant pool, and the rate of hiring dropped as did the average starting wage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000j356pkihcwvjr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we do nothing to make information flow better between workers and firms, then we might have an outcome that looks something like this,\u201d said Silbert, referring to the results of his study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000k356pw0zz8xeg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And with more applications to review, employers are automating the interview itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000l356p1qr1eq7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A majority (54%) of the US job seekers surveyed by recruiting software firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenhouse.com\/newsroom\/an-ai-trust-crisis-70-of-hiring-managers-trust-ai-to-make-faster-and-better-hiring-decisions-only-8-of-job-seekers-call-it-fair?=undefined&amp;utm_source=adwords&amp;utm_medium=paid-search&amp;utm_campaign=Google_Conv_US_Search_Non-Brand-Phrase_Content_3391413&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23248070138&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADk_ksTTwa3iuHhxe_skCYOJ7ThEd&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAi9rJBhCYARIsALyPDtvIxtdiOyzTPvPSLtAaG-G90stIP8DHASAx_oTyU0rHVzoKRNGxBbgaAo-iEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Greenhouse<\/a> in October said they\u2019ve had an AI-led interview. Virtual interviews exploded in popularity during the pandemic in 2020. Many companies now use AI to ask the questions, but that hasn\u2019t made the process any less subjective.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000m356ppg3jmqlo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAlgorithms can copy and even magnify human biases,\u201d said Djurre Holtrop, a researcher who has conducted studies about the use of asynchronous video interviews, algorithms, and LLMs in hiring. \u201cEvery developer needs to be wary of that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000n356pt7deqnis@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Daniel Chait, CEO of Greenhouse, warned that with AI infiltrating hiring \u2013 from applicants using the tool to apply to hundreds of jobs and employees automating the process in response \u2013 it has created a \u201cdoom loop\u201d making everyone miserable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjag7scn000o356p1kc87ogg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBoth sides are saying, \u2018This is impossible, it\u2019s not working, it\u2019s getting worse,\u2019\u201d Chait told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiytfpfc00013b6n7m1rkm7q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Employers are embracing the technology \u2014 one estimate projects the market for recruiting technology will grow to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/industry-reports\/recruitment-software-market-100081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$3.1 billion<\/a> by the end of this year. But state lawmakers, labor groups and individual workers have begun pushing back over fears that AI could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/22\/tech\/workday-ai-hiring-discrimination-lawsuit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discriminate<\/a> against workers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj7i5k7f00003b6pqmc8jcwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO labor union, called the use of AI in hiring \u201cunacceptable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj8z710u0006356pwuwd2b7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAI systems rob workers of opportunities they\u2019re qualified for based on criteria as arbitrary as names, zip codes, or even how often they smile,\u201d Shuler said in a statement to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj63ylnw000b3b6ptceg6gj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            States such as California, Colorado, and Illinois are enacting new laws and regulations aimed at creating standards for the technology\u2019s use in hiring, among other areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjah4332000v356p9o0mgn0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump threatens to undermine state-level AI regulations. Samuel Mitchell, a Chicago-based lawyer who argues employment cases, said that the order can\u2019t \u201cpreempt\u201d state law but does add to the \u201congoing uncertainty\u201d around new regulations on the tech.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja7m5to00073b6p8bdmgzd1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, he added that existing anti-discrimination laws still apply to hiring, even if a company uses AI. And lawsuits are already being filed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj63xwcw00093b6p7djop4o8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a case backed by the American Civil Liberties Union, a deaf woman is suing HireVue (an AI-powered recruiting company) over claims an automated interview she was subject to did not meet accessibility standards required by law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj7jmn4j000b3b6psiscfvhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            HireVue denied the claim and told CNN that its technology works to reduce bias through a \u201cfoundation of validated behavioral science.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja31jfo00073b6pigay4cyt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But despite initial challenges, AI hiring seems here to stay. And to be sure, new developments in AI have led to more sophisticated ways to analyze resumes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/08\/tech\/ai-resume-job-hunters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opening doors for candidates<\/a> who may have otherwise been overlooked.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjbst9gi00013b6pplmo4mto@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But those who value the \u201chuman touch\u201d in hiring are left wanting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj63pmf300053b6p8w8g8933@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jared Looper, an IT project manager based in Salt Lake City, Utah, began his career as a recruiter.
