Sean Ono Lennon<\/a> fears it\u2019s possible for Gen Z to \u201cforget\u201d about The Beatles<\/a> and the legacy of his father, John Lennon<\/a>.\u00a0In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning<\/a>, Lennon explained how he\u2019s\u00a0working to ensure that doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, the world is also the custodian of his legacy,\u201d Lennon told CBS Sunday Morning\u2019s Anthony Mason. \u201cI\u2019m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn\u2019t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko. That\u2019s how I look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Mason asked whether it was \u201ceven possible\u201d for them to be forgotten, Lennon responded: \u201cI do actually [think so]. And I never did before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents gave me so much that I think it\u2019s the least I can do to try and support their legacy in my lifetime,\u201d Lennon added. \u201cI feel like I just owe it to them. It\u2019s a personal thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lennon explained that he views his parents\u2019 legacy as \u201cpeace and love,\u201d but added, \u201cIt\u2019s not just peace and love. It\u2019s an attitude towards activism that is done with humor and love.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the ways Lennon has preserved this\u00a0history is\u00a0through his 2023 Oscar-winning animated short film, WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko, which he co-wrote with former Pixar writer, director, and animator Dave Mullins. The 11-minute film was uploaded to YouTube earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to see if I could get that feeling of maybe it sounds like you\u2019re hearing [Plastic Ono Band\u2019s \u2018Happy Xmas (War Is Over)\u2019]\u00a0again for the first time, or at least in a new context, in a way that you\u2019d pay attention, as opposed to, \u2018Oh, there it is on the radio again,’\u201d Lennon said about the short.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, Lennon shared a rare update on his mother, Yoko Ono, who has inspired his approach to maintaining The Beatles\u2019 legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s good. I mean, you know, she\u2019s 92, so she\u2019s slowed down a lot, and she\u2019s retired,\u201d Lennon said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m kind of trying to do the work that she used to do. That\u2019s why I feel a lot of pressure, actually, to do my best, because she set a high standard for the way that she dealt with my dad\u2019s music, and The Beatles stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cShe\u2019s always been very singular. And I think my dad was less so. You know, he had Paul to write with, and then he was hoping that my mom would kind of be a writing partner. And I just think it\u2019s really funny that, you know, there\u2019s probably only one person in the world who would turn down John Lennon as a writing partner, and that\u2019s my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lennon also\u00a0spoke about the 2024 documentary film One to One: John & Yoko<\/a>, which features phone call recordings and home video that were new even to him. \u201cIt\u2019s like getting more moments to spend with my dad,\u201d he stated. \u201cSo actually, for me on a personal level, it just really means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
