DALLAS, Texas \u2014 An 18-year-old football player was arrested after police say he admitted to shooting another teen in a Dallas home while celebrating South Oak Cliff’s state championship win, according to sources and an arrest warrant affidavit from the Dallas Police Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Officers responded to a shooting call around 9:32 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive in southwest Dallas, according to the affidavit. Sources told WFAA it appeared to be an accidental shooting while the teens gathered Saturday night after South Oak Cliff’s win over Richmond Randle in the 5A Division 2 UIL State Championship game. \u00a0<\/p>\n
WFAA is not naming the player who was shot because he is a minor, but police said he is in stable condition.<\/p>\n
WFAA has reached out to Dallas Independent School District for comment, but officials have not responded as of Monday.<\/p>\n
According to an arrest affidavit, officers found that 18-year-old Xavier Mayfield was holding a rifle in the upstairs bathroom of a two-story home when the victim, another South Oak Cliff football player, called the suspect by his name, according to the affidavit. Mayfield told police that as he turned toward the victim, a single gunshot was fired from the rifle he was holding, the affidavit states.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The shot was fired into a bedroom where the victim was standing and hit him in the neck, the affidavit states.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mayfield told police he intended to take the victim to the hospital and began walking with the victim down the stairs to the first floor of the home, but 911 was called shortly after the shooting because the victim was bleeding heavily.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Both Mayfield and the victim attend South Oak Cliff High School and are on the football team, sources told WFAA. Mayfield played in Saturday’s state championship game and had one interception.<\/p>\n
A witness who was also inside the home said he was in the same bedroom as the victim, looking at photos taken at the football game earlier in the day, when he saw the suspect swinging the rifle that was used in the shooting, according to the affidavit. Mayfield allegedly told the witness that the rifle’s safety was on, the affidavit states. The witness then heard a single gunshot go off as he walked away from the bedroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Neighbors shared video of police arriving on scene. They said the home is a short-term rental property and is the only one in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dallas City Council Member Maxie Johnson said he volunteers every day at South Oak Cliff High School, and said the incident was a shock to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’ve all spoken about gun violence; Coach Todd, Doctor Johnson, the principal of South Oak Cliff. We teach our kids,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cWe’re all concerned but prayerful at the same time.”<\/p>\n
Johnson said he lost his son to gun violence and that he understands the impact of incidents like this can have.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s 365 days a year,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cWe teach them the values and hope they apply the things that we teach them. Sometimes when they’re away from us they make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
This hard truth is one that matters most.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe teach them how to win in life, and this is another life lesson that, uh, we’re going to continue to teach them how to win in life,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n
