But with the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.yahoo.com\/topics\/cost-of-living\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:cost of living;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost of living<\/a>, including rents and mortgages, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-mum-blown-away-at-getting-two-trolleys-full-of-groceries-for-just-50-030151759.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:groceries;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">groceries<\/a> and bills, skyrocketing, new research has laid bare just how much that amount has blown out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The average Australian now needs to earn $389,118 a year to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussies-richer-than-ever-as-wealth-boom-boosts-superannuation-cash-and-stocks-we-are-loaded-000042323.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:feel rich;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feel rich<\/a>, research by Finder found. That\u2019s up more than $50,000 from three years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Finder personal finance expert Sarah Megginson told Yahoo Finance this figure was in stark contrast to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/earnings-and-working-conditions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:amount the average person was actually earning;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">amount the average person was actually earning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">RELATED<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">\u201cWhile social media can make us feel inadequate, the reality is that the average Australian earns just over $60,000 \u2013 a far cry from the $400,000 some might aspire to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Men thought they needed to be earning even more to be <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/how-to-use-the-banks-money-to-retire-richer-the-surprising-upside-of-strategic-debt-040055244.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:considered rich;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considered rich<\/a> at $393,438, while women thought they needed to be putting away $384,424.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">There was also a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tradie-dad-buys-3-year-old-daughter-370000-property-as-younger-generations-face-major-hurdle-012418282.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:generational divide;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">generational divide<\/a>, with Millennials needing the most money to feel rich by a long shot at $470,881. That&#8217;s compared to $273,648 for Baby Boomers, $351,793 for Gen Z, and $416,067 for Gen X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Do you have a story to share? <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/mailto:tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Megginson said the divide could be down to Millennials and Gen X being faced with the strain of homeownership, childcare, education costs and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/retirement-warning-as-amount-aussies-need-hits-record-76505-per-year-feeling-the-squeeze-030343376.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:retirement planning;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retirement planning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Baby Boomers are more likely to be financially secure and have lower living costs, while Gen Z may still live at home or in share houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">A Yahoo Finance poll of nearly 950 readers found 44 per cent thought $100,000 was not a &#8220;good&#8221; salary and people now needed much more. A fifth thought it was a good amount as it was more than the average, while 37 per cent thought it was good but <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/chasing-financial-freedom-why-youre-not-rich-on-a-120000-salary-in-australia-183027191.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:wasn&#039;t worth as much;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wasn&#8217;t worth as much<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Australia\u2019s <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/economy\/price-indexes-and-inflation\/consumer-price-index-australia\/latest-release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Consumer Price Index;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Consumer Price Index<\/a> rose 3.8 per cent in the 12 months to October, up from 3.6 per cent in September. The biggest price rises were seen in housing, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and recreation and culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Separate Finder research found the average Australian in December had an impressive $43,666 in <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/alarming-gen-z-emergency-money-trend-as-young-aussie-reveals-4000-savings-stash-205125874.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:cash savings;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cash savings<\/a>. That was up from $40,195 in December last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Men reported having higher savings at $53,300, while women had nearly half of that at $27,529.
