If you spent more than you earned, find ways to cut costs and consider generating additional income, such as through a side hustle. If you&#8217;re worried about losing your job, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/personal-finance\/how-to-build-emergency-fund\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">building up your emergency fund<\/a> with three to six months&#8217; worth of expenses.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> Among that group of Americans, some of the top reasons for being stressed about finances were the cost of everyday expenses (54%), low income (46%), high debt (35%), and a lack of job security (33%).\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> The most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/consumers-are-still-sour-but-hope-is-rising-on-inflation-11862971\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Sentiment Survey from the University of Michigan<\/a> also indicates that Americans are feeling worse about the economy now than they did a year ago.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> In December 2025, the headline index was 52.9, down more than 28% from a year earlier.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Despite some signs of improvement to close out the year, sentiment remains nearly 30% below December 2024, as pocketbook issues continue to dominate consumer views of the economy,&#8221; said Joanne Hsu, Surveys of Consumers Director, in the release.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> As of November 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/january-federal-reserve-rate-cut-still-on-the-table-after-jobs-report-11870160\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the unemployment rate<\/a> was 4.6%, the highest since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> And while inflation has eased since 2021, it still remains stubbornly high, above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/122214\/how-does-monetary-policy-influence-inflation.asp\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve&#8217;s 2% goal<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> The November inflation report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that inflation had slowed to 2.7%, down from 3% in September.
