{"id":369250,"date":"2025-12-24T17:31:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T17:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/369250\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T17:31:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T17:31:13","slug":"why-so-many-americans-dislike-this-fast-growing-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/369250\/","title":{"rendered":"Why so many Americans dislike this fast-growing economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20qco00fk26p20m2abwgu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data this week showed that the American economy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/23\/economy\/us-gdp-q3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing at its fastest pace in two years<\/a> \u2014 and yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/polling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polling<\/a> shows the mood on Main Street is grim.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00023b6p8vwr13v0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s almost hard to believe we\u2019re talking about the same economy. But the metrics offer another reminder that two seemingly diverging trends can simultaneously be true. An economy that\u2019s growing rapidly doesn\u2019t necessarily mean everyone is feeling it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00033b6pfoavm71d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yes, gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the US economy, heated up this summer to a sizzling annualized pace of 4.3%, far outpacing economists\u2019 expectations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00043b6p3y40wmb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the booming GDP did not translate to a hiring boom, nor was it accompanied by a return to normal inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00053b6pac46iyu4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGDP is an abstract concept. But people know jobs. They know they can\u2019t find a job if they lose theirs,\u201d Moody\u2019s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi told CNN in a phone interview on Tuesday. \u201cAnd they know they are paying more for coffee, beef, electricity, child care and just about everything else.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00073b6pvj44rxg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            GDP is a kind of report card for the economy. But like any report card, it may not paint a full picture of what is happening.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00083b6pzfi061fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, one of the biggest reasons GDP accelerated in the third quarter is that consumer spending heated up. This has been a recurring theme under both the Biden and Trump administrations: Resilient consumer spending in the face of a laundry list of economic headwinds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy00093b6pmlj714xf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the report doesn\u2019t explain which consumers ramped up spending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000a3b6pimbicoxn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists say the third-quarter spending increase was likely driven by higher-income consumers, the ones benefiting the most from record-high real estate values and blockbuster stock returns.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-2251633645.jpg\" alt=\"People shop at an outdoor market in Brooklyn on December 12 in New York City.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1266\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000b3b6pstowjgod@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many lower- and middle-income Americans, on the other hand, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/19\/economy\/us-labor-market-outcomes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggling to stay afloat<\/a>. Some of them are cutting back on spending and falling behind on bills.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000c3b6pqehl0hyr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRetirees and the top 10% continue to drive the economy. It\u2019s still very much a K-shaped economy,\u201d said Mike Reid, senior US economist at RBC Capital Markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000e3b6pxxdl5h2e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While people may not feel high GDP, they do feel high prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000f3b6pz59mqg6b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inflation hasn\u2019t gone through the roof this year, as some feared it would because of President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000g3b6pbcbbn8l0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But inflation also hasn\u2019t improved much since Trump took office in January, when prices were rising at a 3% annual rate compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/18\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-price-index-november\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November\u2019s 2.7% rate<\/a> (according to government data that carries a lot of fine print because of shutdown-related distortions). Still, it\u2019s higher than the 1.7% average annual inflation rate Americans experienced in the decade preceding the onset of the pandemic, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000h3b6pk0yc50nm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prices on some essentials have gone down. For instance, eggs in November were 13% cheaper than a year earlier, according to the BLS. Milk was 1% cheaper.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000i3b6prxepheb3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gasoline has been under control all year, with the national average falling in recent days to $2.86 per gallon, a fresh four-and-a-half-year low. That\u2019s a far cry from $5-a-gallon gas in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000j3b6p0qi5c91y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, other essentials have gone up in price.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000k3b6p4t2m1ejm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consumers are paying on average 7% more for electricity, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/22\/climate\/high-electricity-bills-maryland-new-jersey-pennsylvania\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hot topic<\/a> during the November governor races in New Jersey and Virginia.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-2251778602.jpg\" alt=\"Power transmission lines in Grove City, Ohio, in December.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000l3b6pjajgk0le@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Natural gas, the most common way to heat homes in America, is 9% more expensive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000m3b6poq2ckfid@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ground beef surged 15% year-over-year in November, the biggest increase since 2020. And consumers are shelling out a lot more for car repair (10%) and coffee (19%), according to the BLS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000n3b6pya8m23lt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s true that paychecks are also up \u2013 but often not by enough to keep up with the cost of living.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000o3b6pd9bnpx0s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consider that Bank of America deposit data shows that paychecks beat prices in November only for high-income households. Middle-income household wage growth was just 2.3%, while lower-income households inched up by only 1.4%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000s3b6p4mk7g3sw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the US economy were truly booming, consumers wouldn\u2019t be worried about job security. That\u2019s not what we\u2019re seeing today.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000t3b6pffbzerfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The share of consumers who believe job openings will be more plentiful over the next six months fell to the lowest level in four years, according to consumer confidence figures The Conference Board published Tuesday. The share of consumers who believe it\u2019s harder to get a job also rose.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000u3b6pcvaxwah0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It comes as the unemployment rate hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/16\/economy\/us-jobs-report-final-november-october\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four-year high<\/a> of 4.6% last month, up from 4% in January. Earlier this year the number of job seekers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/03\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-layoffs-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exceeded the number of jobs available<\/a> for the first time in four years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000v3b6pqzugkx13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s driving consumers to be more downbeat about the economy, the overarching consumer confidence data showed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000w3b6pgjtlwowc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One reason hiring has slowed is because businesses are learning how to do more with fewer workers, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence. At the same time, Trump\u2019s erratic trade policy changes have left many businesses in a state of paralysis. With little certainty about his next tariff moves, many have paused hiring plans. Additionally, some businesses have resorted to staffing reductions to avoid having to pass along heftier price increases from tariffs to consumers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj20uyy000x3b6pyqfx2ggt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bottom line: GDP, no matter how high, won\u2019t make Americans feel better about this economy.
