Given Alpine is currently negotiating with Audi and Aston Martin to sell them TPC days in 2026, using last year’s A524 and its Power Units, the sound of the French engines will still be heard in private testing, but in terms of official participation in Grand Prix racing, that was the end of it.

The shutdown of the Formula 1 department in that historic factory, just a stone’s throw from Paris Orly’s airport, marks the end of a remarkable success story that started in the early 1970s. With Matra withdrawing from motor racing, Renault stepped up its efforts to keep France relevant on the world stage and help as many French drivers as possible reach Formula 1, in close collaboration with oil giant Elf.

Winning the Le Mans 24 Hours was the first goal and it was achieved in 1978, at the third attempt, when Formula 1 driver Didier Pironi and veteran Jean-Pierre Jaussaud beat the opposition, but by then the French manufacturer had already taken the jump into Grand Prix racing, with Jean-Pierre Jabouille starting the team’s history by taking part in the 1977 British Grand Prix with the RS01.

The turbocharged engine powering the Mirage GR8 Renault sports car. (Photo by David Phipps/Sutton Images)

Renault didn’t do things the easy way, bringing turbo technology to Formula 1 and Michelin as its tyre partner, the Clermont-Ferrand company also making its debut in modern Formula 1 there and then.

In the following 38 years, Renault was a constant presence in Formula 1, missing out only in 1988 and 1989. There was no Renault name, but the engines continued to race between 1998 and 2000, when Supertec held the commercial rights, and again in 2016 and 2017, when TAG Heuer branded the V6. For the last 35 years, engines have always been made in Viry-Chatillon.

Now, the French company bows out, proud of winning two Formula 1 drivers’ titles, in 2005 and 2006 with Fernando Alonso, and two Constructors’ titles under its own name, plus another nine as engine supplier to Williams, Benetton and Red Bull.

In its 771 Grands Prix, completing a total of 670,637 racing kilometres, Renault supplied power to no fewer than 11 different teams, driven by 88 drivers. During this long career in Formula 1, the French group’s power units have achieved a total of 465 podium finishes, including 169 victories, claimed 213 pole positions and 177 fastest laps.

And the drivers associated with Renault also contributed to the engine’s tally of 11,196 laps led, totalling 54,429km. All this for a total of 8,281.5 points, numbers that show the enormity of what the French manufacturer achieved over almost 40 years in Grand Prix racing.

Recent Storiesarray (
0 =>
WP_Term::__set_state(array(
‘term_id’ => 37,
‘name’ => ‘F1’,
‘slug’ => ‘f1’,
‘term_group’ => 0,
‘term_taxonomy_id’ => 37,
‘taxonomy’ => ‘category’,
‘description’ => ‘An Introduction to Formula One (F1)
Formula One, or F1, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing, governed by the Fédération Internationale de l\\’Automobile (FIA) and is owned by Liberty Media.
