{"id":370456,"date":"2025-12-25T06:55:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T06:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/370456\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T06:55:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T06:55:08","slug":"tiny-pacific-nation-of-palau-to-take-migrants-from-us-in-return-for-aid-palau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/370456\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiny Pacific nation of Palau to take migrants from US in return for aid | Palau"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Palau will take up to 75 migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after the tiny Pacific Island nation signed a memorandum of understanding with Washington on transfer of third-country nationals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau spoke to Palau president Surangel Whipps in a call on Tuesday about transferring third-country nationals to Palau, the two sides said in separate statements, after Palau\u2019s lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/23\/trump-administration-asks-tiny-pacific-nation-of-palau-to-accept-migrants-deported-from-us\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejected a previous request from Washington<\/a> on the matter earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration policies, including his administration\u2019s deportation drive, have been broadly condemned by human rights advocates over concerns about due process. The Trump administration has also sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/10\/deportations-equatorial-guinea-money\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of people to third countries<\/a> to which they have no ties, a tactic that was rarely used in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump has said the measures are aimed at improving domestic security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Palau and the US signed an agreement \u201callowing up to 75 third country nationals, who have never been charged with a crime, to live and work in Palau, helping address local labor shortages in needed occupations,\u201d the office of Palau\u2019s president said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn this regard, the United States granted $7.5m to address the needs of relevant Palau public services,\u201d the US statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US state department and Palau also said Washington will give assistance of $2m to provide advisers to Palau who will help in security issues and an assistance of $6m for reforms related to Palau\u2019s civil service pension plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In late July, Palau\u2019s Congress said it \u201ccannot accept\u201d a US proposal for it to accept asylum seekers from other countries, amid a push from the US to deport migrants to countries they were not from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Palau, with a population of 17,000, has a compact of free association with the US, which provides economic assistance in return for allowing American military access to its territory.
