AUSTIN (KXAN) \u2014 The city of Round Rock will get a new piece of high-profile art next year after city council members unanimously approved a commission contract for it last week.<\/p>\n

Council approved a $360,000 contract with world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly<\/a>, who will construct a roughly 9-by-6-foot blown glass piece. According to the city, the custom Chihuly creation will go in the City Arts Center\u2019s newly renovated Griffith Building.<\/p>\n

This will be Chihuly\u2019s only permanent installation in Central Texas, according to city leaders, who said they think the piece will boost downtown visibility and attract visitors to the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe combination of having this beautiful new facility and an internationally recognizable piece of artwork custom-made for our community will continue to increase foot traffic in our downtown,\u201d Sara Bustilloz, Communications and Marketing Director for the City of Round Rock, said during the Dec. 18 council meeting. \u201cWe think having this piece will absolutely turn heads in the art world and allow success to follow success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fabrication is set to begin in January, and a full mock-up is expected to be available for review in the spring.<\/p>\n

The piece is expected to be installed in the fall of 2026.<\/p>\n
