(ABC News: Rachel Holdsworth)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">PCYC NSW launched its first 100 per cent First Nations sporting pathways program &#8220;Indigenous All-stars&#8221; this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 16-year-old from Wagga Wagga was scouted from a pool of more than 400 basketball players at PCYC&#8217;s Nations of Origin event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once we figured out there were scouts there, we really ramped it up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The group then travelled to Sydney to find out who would end up in the final team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Swan said tensions were running high when it was originally thought the scouts would only pick eight players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once we heard the news they were taking 11, everyone was excited,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hugo throwing the ball in the hoop.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/05ca0419abba13d0773468cfc29f5a37\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The team was scouted from a pool of more than 400 basketball players at PCYC&#8217;s Nations of Origin event. (Supplied: PCYC NSW)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Me and my brothers and sister play it now, all in a rep team,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just good that we have everyone in our family playing a high level of basketball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Penrith said the love and support of his family kept him motivated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I go to school, get off the bus and go straight to the gym and practice by myself, every morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;No easy feat&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But qualifying for the First Nations squad took more than a smooth jump shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Each potential player needed a school attendance rate above 80 per cent, connections to local elders and PCYC, and no negative dealings with NSW Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">PCYC Coach Zach Maloney said to be picked from 400 basketballers was no easy feat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The team smiling at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/66cabbc634842545350efbf666a41767\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The team will compete across the US for three weeks, including California and Utah.
