American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has taken aim at Donald Trump in a brutal Christmas Day message, lamenting the \u201cmess\u201d the United States has become.<\/p>\n
Kimmel was invited by British broadcast network Channel 4 to deliver its annual \u201calternative Christmas message\u201d, and the late-night host revelled in the opportunity to warn UK viewers that \u201ctyranny is booming\u201d in the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year,\u201d Kimmel said, before addressing the firestorm of his show\u2019s suspension in the wake of his controversial comments about Mr Trump and Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n

By continuing you agree to our Terms<\/a> and Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cYou may have read in your colourful newspapers that my country\u2019s President would like me to shut up because I don\u2019t adore him in the way he likes to be adored,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe American Government made a threat against me and the company I work for, and all of a sudden we were off the air.\u201d<\/p>\n Describing the show\u2019s September 23 return as a \u201cSeptember Christmas miracle\u201d, Kimmel thanked the \u201cmillions and millions of people\u201d who spoke out against the decision to pull him off the air.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople who never watched my show, people who were on the record saying they hate my show, spoke out, they marched, and they did all of this to support the right to free expression of speech,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause so many people spoke out, we came back. Our show came back stronger than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel made it clear he has no intention of easing off the US President now that he has returned to television screens.<\/p>\n \u201cWe won, the President lost and now I\u2019m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on Earth a right and richly deserved bollocking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Kimmel told the British audience he was sharing the story to warn that Government censorship can happen anywhere, not just in countries like Russia or North Korea.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s what we thought, and now we\u2019ve got King Donny the Eighth calling for executions,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n The late night host went on to reflect on the irony of America\u2019s founding ideals being undermined by a leader he said was behaving like a monarch.<\/p>\n \u201cWe Americans are very proud of not having a King. It\u2019s kind of why we left,\u201d he said, referencing the country\u2019s break from British rule.<\/p>\n Kimmel jokingly stressed that his criticism was not aimed at Britain\u2019s royal family.<\/p>\n \u201cJust for the record, we have nothing against your King. I don\u2019t know if you know this, but his son lives here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cSome of us just have a problem with the guy who thinks he\u2019s our King,\u201d he added, before delivering a stark assessment of the state of American democracy.<\/p>\n \u201cHere in the United States, we are both figuratively and literally tearing down the structures of our democracy. From the free press, to science, to medicine, to judicial independence, to the actual White House itself. We are a right mess.\u201d<\/p>\n He closed the three-minute speech by urging the UK not to abandon faith in the US.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are not all like (Mr Trump), we are not all like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cOur message to you, our friends across the pond this Christmas is, don\u2019t give up on us. We\u2019re going through a bit of a wobble right now, but we\u2019ll come around.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re always just a little late to the game but do we come through in the end? Maybe. Give us about three years.
