{"id":372707,"date":"2025-12-26T09:33:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T09:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/372707\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T09:33:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T09:33:17","slug":"boxing-day-sales-in-perth-see-thousands-descend-on-karrinyup-cbd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/372707\/","title":{"rendered":"Boxing Day sales in Perth see thousands descend on Karrinyup, CBD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Perth bargain hunters prepared to dodge crowds of trollies rushed to Karrinyup Shopping Centre to snatch up Boxing Day sales on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">At the strike of 8am, families, friends and singles on a mission rushed through the doors of the northern suburbs shopping precinct to a range of stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">By midday, both the Perth central business district and DFO Perth were bustling with crowds looking to save cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Karrinyup shopping centre general manager Trudy Cook estimated almost 100,000 people were expected to descend on the centre on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWe were over nearly 85,000 (for Boxing Day) last year \u2014 we think this year we\u2019re going to get close to nearly 100,000,\u201d Ms Cook said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bef926e9a946eb94403a702d54cd412e84c141c1.jpg\" alt=\"Shoppers pictured at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Perth, on Friday during the Boxing Day sales. Carwyn Monck Credit: Carwyn Monck\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIt\u2019s under so much management control . . we\u2019ve got all our teams in place, we\u2019ve got traffic management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">For friends Jobe Henderson, 19 and Remy Noack, 20, an early morning wake-up still saw them wait more than 30 minutes in line at sleepwear giant Peter Alexander\u2019s Karrinyup store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIt was crazy \u2014 we were lined up in the store for about half an hour just to pay, just to check out,\u201d Ms Noack said after arriving at the shops around 8am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The pair said the hype around the sleepwear brand had rocketed by TikTok trends \u2014 and families wanting matching sets for their loved ones, including their pets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThere was a few bumps and pushing among people trying to grab their things . . . but it was expected for a busy day like today,\u201d Mr Henderson said after surviving a trip to Peter Alexander.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/512e6d7baa62b6f9cfb5b67ad504edbcedccb58a.jpg\" alt=\"Shoppers at Peter Alexander at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Perth, on Friday during this year\u2019s Boxing Day sales. Carwyn Monck Credit: Carwyn Monck\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cGet in very soon, because it does go very fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Other popular stores at Karrinyup on Boxing Day were JB Hi-Fi and the newly opened flagship Victoria\u2019s Secret store, which had a line out the front and security keeping a watchful eye throughout the day. 17-year-old Dominie Vacca said despite the steep prices, she was happy with her purchase at the newly opened store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Ms Cook said the Karrinyup store was second highest grossing Victoria\u2019s Secret outlet internationally after opening two weeks before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Other punters flocked to the Lego store, including parents Ryan Moresby and Michelle Altham who purchased Duplo for their one-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20a48f4a9ded7324b26808efc45aa4e00009e81d.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Moresby, Michelle Altham, and Alaska Moresby, 1, pictured at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Perth, on Friday during the Boxing Day sales. Traffic controllers were observed directing drivers throughout the carpark and nearby streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Data from the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan said Australians were forecasted to spend around $1.6b on Boxing Day sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Between Christmas and December 31, spending nationally is forecasted to hit more than $3.82b.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c409cd7dfe1518c30cb12da66518baaab25aa7bd.jpg\" alt=\"Traffic building up near DFO Perth on Friday during the Boxing Day sales. Carwyn Monck Credit: Carwyn Monck\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The data forecasted the biggest spending nationally would be on household goods ($476m) followed by clothing, shoes and accessories ($216m) and then department stores ($123m).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Retailers association chief executive Chris Rodwell said Australians were still driven to the \u201cBoxing Day shopping experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWe expect value-driven behaviour to remain a feature of consumer spending into 2026, with households continuing to prioritise competitive prices and strong promotional activity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cRetailers are finishing the year on solid footing. Carwyn Monck Credit: Carwyn Monck\/The West Australian<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s your local shop, a national chain or a trusted Australian online retailer, every purchase flows back into local jobs, training, wages and community investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Ultra low-cost offshore platforms like Temu and Shein cannot match that contribution and are not held accountable to the same standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Federal minister Patrick Gorman was keen to trumpet Labor\u2019s protection of penalty rates for retail workers, as the sales got off to a slow start in Perth\u2019s CBD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">There was less than a dozen people waiting for the department store doors to open at 8am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">But Mr Gorman wasn\u2019t worried that online shopping had taken some customers away from brick and mortar stores.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/9752573e8e8f738161e2846efc857f6b57c64de2.jpg\" alt=\"Boxing day sales in Perths CBD saw thousands of people out in search of bargains. We\u2019re out here early, I\u2019m an early riser. I like to get my work done early, but I\u2019m sure the CBD is going to be bustling, and you\u2019ll see that as the day progresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWhen it comes to the protections for penalty rates, these are also protections for people who work in warehousing, people who work in logistics, delivery, a whole range of workforces rely on those penalty rates, some 2.6 million Australians, and if they were to all start going backwards, that wouldn\u2019t be good for our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Research by digital payment platform PayPal showed 82 per cent of Australians planned to do some online shopping for the end-of-year sales while almost 60 per cent said more than half of their shopping was online.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c0770575f2d8ecd06ebf678af4d7e7361b7451cf.jpg\" alt=\"Boxing day sales in Perths CBD saw thousands of people out in search of bargains.
