US offers to mediate more talks to end the latest flare-up of violence, which has upended an October peace accord.<\/p>\n

Cambodia has accused Thai forces of carrying out \u201cruthless\u201d aerial attacks against it, even as the two sides hold new talks aimed at easing their long-running border conflict.<\/p>\n

Thai fighter jets dropped dozens of bombs near the northwestern Cambodian village of Chouk Chey early on Friday morning, causing \u201cextensive destruction to civilians\u2019 homes, properties, and public infrastructure\u201d, Cambodia\u2019s state news agency cited the defence ministry as saying.<\/p>\n

Later in the morning, Thai forces also launched artillery attacks in the Stung Bot area near the border, reported the Cambodian news agency Agence Kampuchea Presse.<\/p>\n

Cambodia\u2019s defence ministry condemned the attacks as \u201cgrave acts of aggression\u201d that intentionally endangered \u201ccivilian lives and civilian infrastructure\u201d. It said the attacks in Chouk Chey were \u201cexceptionally ruthless and inhumane\u201d.<\/p>\n

The violence marks the latest flare-up since renewed clashes<\/a> broke out on December 8, derailing an expanded ceasefire<\/a> brokered by the United States and Malaysia in October. Fighting this month has killed at least 96 people, according to authorities on both sides, while displacing about one million people.<\/p>\n

Defence officials from Thailand and Cambodia held their first talks since renewed clashes<\/a> started, on Wednesday, though they did not appear to produce any major diplomatic breakthrough.<\/p>\n

Cambodia\u2019s Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said the two sides planned to continue further talks<\/a> under a bilateral border committee on Friday, according to the Anadolu news agency.<\/p>\n

She hoped new talks would help re-establish a truce, bring regional stability and allow displaced civilians to return to their homes, reported Anadolu.<\/p>\n

Thailand\u2019s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also expressed hope for a renewed truce and said the country\u2019s defence minister would join continuing discussions on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is important is that both of us have to keep the promises that both will not threaten, offend, and instigate, and to reduce hostility \u200dbetween the two \u2060countries,\u201d\u00a0 Charnvirakul told reporters in Bangkok.<\/p>\n

US, Russia urge diplomatic resolution<\/p>\n

The conflict between Thailand and Cambodia stems from a territorial dispute over the colonial-era demarcation of their 800km (500-mile) border and a smattering of ancient temple ruins situated on the frontier.<\/p>\n

Each side has blamed the other for instigating the renewed fighting, claiming self-defence, while trading accusations of attacks on civilians.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the US expressed concern about the outburst of violence and offered to mediate new talks. In a call with Cambodia\u2019s Prime Minister Hun Manet, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio \u201creiterated President [Donald] Trump\u2019s desire for peace and the need to fully implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords,\u201d according to a media release by the US State Department.<\/p>\n
