The record in a single calendar year is 12, which occurred in 2016. Titles changed hands 11 times in 2017 and 2024.Nine out of 11 weight classes across men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s divisions crowned a new champion, a new UFC record. The previous highest total was eight, which occurred in 2016 and 2017.Three fighters became two-time champions in 2025. The record is four, which occurred in 2022.Two fighters became two-division champions in 2025.One fighter defended a title in one weight class and won a title in another.Two fighters became champions and lost their title in 2025.One fighter was elevated from interim to undisputed status without competing.Two fighters attempted to defend their newly acquired title: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/magomed-ankalaev\/\" data-autotag=\"b3623ff0-35ed-48a0-91c7-cce139b31f45\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Magomed Ankalaev<\/a> lost a rematch against <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/alex-pereira\/\" data-autotag=\"ce486d6a-f145-4361-848f-0c7402f7a976\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alex Pereira<\/a>, and Jack Della Maddalena lost to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/islam-makhachev\/\" data-autotag=\"3a8fae83-21ca-40ef-bc2e-df37b8a7def3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Islam Makhachev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/zhang-weili\/\" data-autotag=\"68440a44-4e33-4a7a-89e5-97271a649077\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zhang Weili<\/a>, who was attempting to chase two-divisional greatness, created an opportunity for someone to capture the vacant women&#8217;s strawweight title, and that person would be Mackenzie Dern.<\/p>\n<p>Dern (16-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) began her year with a third-round submission win over Amanda Ribas in January. In October at UFC 321, a vacant title opportunity presented itself, and Dern faced Virna Jandiroba for a career-defining chance. After 25 minutes, Dern was <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/10\/25\/ufc-321-results-mackenzie-dern-vs-virna-jandiroba\/86902705007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared the winner unanimously<\/a> in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p>While it may not have been in the manner he wanted, Joshua Van made good on his championship promise.<\/p>\n<p>At UFC 323, Van (16-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) faced long-reigning flyweight king <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/alexandre-pantoja\/\" data-autotag=\"958e306f-7da5-4cd1-8732-0fa74c32f289\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alexandre Pantoja<\/a> in the co-main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight lasted only 26 seconds and <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/12\/07\/ufc-323-joshua-van-alexandre-pantoja-flyweight-title-injury-tko\/87652492007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended abruptly due to an injury<\/a> to Pantoja. Regardless of how it happened, Van exited 2025 with the UFC flyweight title, riding a six-fight winning streak.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla Harrison, women&#8217;s bantamweight<\/p>\n<p>Once she entered the UFC, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Kayla Harrison would get her hands on the UFC women&#8217;s bantamweight title. It only took her three fights in the UFC to make that a reality.<\/p>\n<p>At UFC 316, Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) took on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/julianna-pena\/\" data-autotag=\"871d5577-ded3-4fb8-8314-506dd1c4a12d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Julianna Pe\u00f1a<\/a> in the co-main event. The Olympic gold medalist Harrison took the title from Pe\u00f1a with <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/06\/08\/ufc-316-results-kayla-harrison-vs-julianna-pena-amanda-nunes\/84098675007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a second-round kimura<\/a>, adding another trophy to her case, and setting up a massive fight to start 2026 against UFC Hall of Famer Amanda Nunes.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/petr-yan\/\" data-autotag=\"77c99b41-af2c-48e5-8157-cc6aa937f311\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Petr Yan<\/a>, men&#8217;s bantamweight<\/p>\n<p>Petr Yan is once again back on top of the men&#8217;s bantamweight division.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/merab-dvalishvili\/\" data-autotag=\"ebddd595-a062-4c11-b195-30662b241586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Merab Dvalishvili<\/a> was on the verge of making history, attempting a fourth title defense in a calendar year. Yan (20-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC) had other ideas, though, and stopped &#8220;The Machine&#8217;s&#8221; incredible run by <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/12\/07\/ufc-323-results-petr-yan-def-merab-dvalishvili-bantamweight-title\/87652923007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">winning their rematch<\/a> by unanimous decision. The fight looked much different than the first, which took place in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Yan first won the UFC bantamweight title by stopping Jose Aldo at UFC 251. He would lose it by DQ against Aljamain Sterling in his first attempt at defending. He then won the interim title at UFC 267, but failed to unify in a rematch against Sterling at UFC 273.<\/p>\n<p>Yan enters 2026 with gold around his waist, on a four-fight winning streak.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Volkanovski reclaimed the UFC featherweight title in his only appearance of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The title was left vacant due to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/ilia-topuria\/\" data-autotag=\"d2d9c8e7-e859-407a-b607-f197e9766d0c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ilia Topuria<\/a> moving up to challenge for the 155-pound title, and Volkanovski (27-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) capitalized. At UFC 314 at Kaseya Center in Miami, Volkanovski took on Diego Lopes in the main event. Volkanovski pushed through <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/04\/13\/ufc-314-results-alexander-volkanovski-reclaims-throne-through-hard-fought-battle-vs-diego-lopes\/83068941007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a tough Fight of the Night battle<\/a> to reclaim the title by unanimous decision.<\/p>\n<p>Volkanovski recorded four title defenses during his first reign. He then attempted to win the lightweight title twice, but came up short in both opportunities. In his featherweight title return, he dropped the title to Topuria, but was able to capture it again in his absence.<\/p>\n<p>Ilia Topuria, lightweight<\/p>\n<p>Ilia Topuria joined elite company by becoming a two-division champion in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>After recording a title defense at featherweight last October, Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) decided it was time to move up to lightweight to chase a second title. His opportunity came at UFC 317 against former champion <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/charles-oliveira\/\" data-autotag=\"da70f445-ea63-4b59-809d-85548f89fa4a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Charles Oliveira<\/a>, as they challenged for the title Islam Makhachev left vacant in his move up to welterweight.<\/p>\n<p>Topuria was nearly flawless, knocking out Oliveira <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/06\/29\/ufc-317-results-ilia-topuria-knockout-charles-oliveira-lightweight-title\/84405222007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">midway through the first round<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through just nine UFC fights, Topuria has reached the pinnacle of two divisions and has teased the desire to go after a third.<\/p>\n<p>Islam Makhachev, welterweight<\/p>\n<p>Jack Della Maddalena won the UFC welterweight title by winning a unanimous decision over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/belal-muhammad\/\" data-autotag=\"dcff0aca-b9c1-49a6-9808-65f40aa147a2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Belal Muhammad<\/a> at UFC 315, but would lose his throne by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Islam Makhachev became a two-division champion, winning title fights in the lightweight and welterweight divisions in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Starting his year at UFC 311 in January, Makhachev (28-1 MMA, 17-1 UFC) submitted Renato Moicano to record his <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/01\/19\/ufc-311-results-islam-makhachev-submission-renato-moicano\/77819837007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fourth lightweight title defense<\/a>. He then moved up to welterweight to face Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November. Makhachev won the fight <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/11\/16\/ufc-322-islam-makhachev-vs-jack-della-maddalena-results-new-champion\/87302290007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by unanimous decision<\/a> to get his infamous picture with two UFC titles over his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Khamzat Chimaev finally got his opportunity to fight for a UFC title in 2025, and made the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Chimaev was instantly labeled as a future champion after his debut in the promotion, and reached gold in his ninth UFC fight. At UFC 319 at United Center in Chicago, Chimaev faced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/dricus-du-plessis\/\" data-autotag=\"6803ad69-a330-492d-b94c-3f422f4770b4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dricus Du Plessis<\/a> in the main event. Chimaev <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/08\/17\/ufc-319-khamzat-chimaev-schools-dricus-du-plessis-to-win-title\/85694626007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">completely dominated the fight<\/a> on the mat to begin his championship reign.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Pereira, light heavyweight<\/p>\n<p>Magomed Ankalaev dethroned Alex Pereira at UFC 313, winning by unanimous decision. However, the title would return to Pereira a few months later.<\/p>\n<p>At UFC 320, Pereira got his revenge against Ankalaev, in a fight that was vastly different than their first meeting. This time around, Pereira was able to connect early with his powerful striking ability, resulting in a first-round <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/ufc\/2025\/10\/05\/ufc-320-alex-pereira-knockout-jiri-prochazka-light-heavyweight-title-rematch-second-reign\/86532967007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knockout in just 80 seconds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pereira first tasted UFC gold in the middleweight division. He then became a two-division champion in 2023, and defended the title three times before losing to Ankalaev. He enters 2026 on his third UFC title reign.<\/p>\n<p>And still<\/p>\n<p>These fighters entered the year as champion, and maintained their position heading into 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/valentina-shevchenko\/\" data-autotag=\"ee32473d-9fc2-400e-b645-fc00a010ae9e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Valentina Shevchenko<\/a> \u2013 Women&#8217;s flyweightShevchenko fought twice in 2025, winning unanimous decisions against Manon Fiorot and Zhang Weili. The results were the first and second title defenses of her second reign.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.usatoday.com\/fighters\/tom-aspinall\/\" data-autotag=\"15df5085-a130-4f6c-a02c-df1af048004a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tom Aspinall<\/a> \u2013 heavyweightAspinall began the year as interim champion, but was elevated to undisputed when Jon Jones retired in June.
