While most of the world has emerged from the holiday haze to focus on the post-Christmas clean up<\/a>, or set their sights on planning the perfect New Year\u2019s Eve part<\/a>y, there are those among us who\u2019ve found themselves consumed by matters of an entirely different kind. Namely, the events set to take place at \u201cthe cottage\u201d during the hotly-anticipated finale of this season\u2019s biggest television hit, Heated Rivalry. <\/p>\n

In case you missed it, the show follows the rivals-to-lovers story of professional hockey players Shane Hollander (played by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie) and is based on the popular Game Changers series by author Rachel Reid.<\/p>\n

In the weeks since it debuted on HBO Max<\/a>, Heated Rivalry \u2013 and its charismatic leads \u2013 have soared to the top of our collective pop culture consciousness to become the most talked-about show of the year \u2013 even competing with Stranger Things<\/a> for the title of most-anticipated finale of 2025. <\/p>\n

But while our hearts and minds are still reeling from the emotional events of the show\u2019s penultimate episode, it was Rozanov\u2019s closing statement that\u2019s sent fans over the edge. The phrase in question? \u201cI\u2019m coming to the cottage\u201d, of course. <\/p>\n

Naturally, in the lead up to the show\u2019s finale, our thoughts have been fixated on \u201cthe cottage\u201d and what it means for our favourite rink-side parasocial romance. Below, everything we know about Shane Hollander\u2019s lakeside cottage where the final chapter is set to unfold. <\/p>\n

Where is Shane Hollander\u2019s cottage in Heated Rivalry filmed?<\/p>\n

Far from a studio set, the cottage in question is an architect-designed retreat on Lake Muskoka<\/a> in Ontario, one of the most exclusive and tightly held stretches of waterfront realestate in Canada. And it\u2019s not hard to see why. <\/p>\n

Designed by Toronto-based architect Trevor McIvor, Shane Hollander\u2019s hideaway in Heated Rivalry is nothing like the cottage-style homes<\/a> we\u2019ve come to associate with the traditional cottagecore aesthetic<\/a>. In fact, Canadian cottages have more in common with Scandinavian-style dwellings than the quaint British equivalent. <\/p>\n

Case in point \u2013 the breathtaking Barlochan Cottage<\/a>, revealed by the architect himself as the real-life finale location in an Instagram post<\/a> earlier this week. <\/p>\n

The cottage is a private residence designed as a contemporary \u201cfour-season\u201d retreat for its lucky homeowners. It\u2019s low-profile structure hugs the landscape, allowing the picturesque setting to remain the visual focus while its materiality takes its cues from the surrounding landscape. <\/p>\n

Sleek concrete flooring and oak battens provide a neutral palette for the wrap-around glazing (a surprise inclusion for Shane \u201cthere are so many windows\u201d Hollander), while Douglas Fir Kindl (a traditional Japanese charred wood) anchors the home to its site. <\/p>\n

Filming the Heated Rivalry finale at \u201cThe Cottage\u201d <\/p>\n

While the episode\u2019s setting provided a delicious dose of design inspiration for us viewers, as it turns out, the cottage wasn\u2019t exactly the easiest set to film in. According to series creator Jacob Tierney, one of the episode\u2019s most memorable moments, which, to avoid spoilers, we\u2019ll simply refer to as the couch scene, had to be refilmed due to a massive rainstorm that rendered a perfect take unuseable. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to pause because that whole house was glass. So when it\u2019s raining, it just sounds like a tin can,\u201d explained Tierney in an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s actually really nice when you\u2019re living in it, but not when you\u2019re trying to record sounds.\u201d <\/p>\n

Despite some minor production setbacks, the cottage chosen as the finale location offers viewers more than just an insight into Hollander\u2019s good taste. Instead, it could be argued that its selection \u2013 over say, a secluded cabin deep in the woods where the two could coalesce in complete privacy \u2013 indicates a significant shift in their relationship status. One that\u2019s relatively out in the open, at least compared to their previous meetups, which up until this point have been conducted within the sheltered walls of hotel rooms or private places far from prying eyes. <\/p>\n

Even though the cottage is surrounded by glass, the couple are finally able to let their guards down and \u201cplay house,\u201d says Tierney. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a tentative nature to episode 6. Although it\u2019s calm, it\u2019s still like, \u2018Can this work, when we\u2019re left alone to our own devices?\u201d remarks actor Connor Storrie in the same interview with EW. \u201cThere is a different cadence of speech,\u201d he says of how the pair interact in the cottage. \u201cThere is a different energy that they just show up in, but I think that\u2019s really just Hudson and I being locked into the way that Jacob wrote this and then also him giving us a platform to discover what that looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

What happens at the cottage in the Heated Rivalry book? <\/p>\n

In the Heated Rivalry book \u2013 which is the second in the Gamechangers series \u2013 Shane invites Ilya to his cottage for the off-season. While Ilya\u2019s fear of being discovered sees him decline the initial offer, Scott\u2019s groundbreaking moment (seen in episode 5) shifts the dial on their hidden romance and causes Ilya to reconsider. <\/p>\n

During their romantic getaway at the cottage, the could-be couple hash out a plan to keep things under wraps until after they retire, but when Shane\u2019s parents make an unexpected visit, their plans are thrown into disarray. <\/p>\n

In the book\u2019s epilogue, which takes place roughly 12-months after their cottage moment, the pair announce their intention to start a charity together \u2013 which acts as a convenient way for Shane and Ilya to continue spending time together without raising any questions about their relationship status. <\/p>\n

However, with the Heated Rivalry finale only just airing on Boxing Day (Australia-time), viewers will be able to see for themselves if the series followed suit, or if showrunners decided to forge a new path for the beloved couple.<\/p>\n

Either way, we\u2019ll be dreaming of this show \u2013 and Shane\u2019s lakeside cottage \u2013 for a long time to come.<\/p>\n
