{"id":376616,"date":"2025-12-28T19:07:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T19:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/376616\/"},"modified":"2025-12-28T19:07:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T19:07:17","slug":"southern-health-rolls-out-new-initiatives-while-addressing-challenges-steinbachonline-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/376616\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Health rolls out new initiatives while addressing challenges &#8211; SteinbachOnline.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Southern Health\u2013Sant\u00e9 Sud is highlighting key developments from the past year, including\u00a0a leadership\u00a0transition, program expansion, and regional health challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New leadership\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Southern Health\u2013Sant\u00e9 Sud began the year facing a leadership transition after Chief Executive Officer Jane Curtis accepted a new role with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Dana Human stepped into the position as Interim CEO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human brings\u00a0years of experience as a nurse and leader within Southern Health\u2013Sant\u00e9 Sud and\u00a0says\u00a0she benefited\u00a0greatly from\u00a0mentorship along the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy career journey led me to work in various leadership roles, including the VP of Community and Continuing Care under Jane Curtis&#8217;s leadership for a few years and Jane always worked to empower us as her leadership team to obtain the skills required to steer the Southern Health-Sante Sud to ensure continuity with services, no matter what the situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human says she felt prepared to step into the role on short notice and\u00a0credits\u00a0the support around her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continue to be overwhelmed by the support I received from the staff in Southern Health, our community partners, our affiliate partners, you name it.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0really all about relationships and\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0so glad that we have so many good ones.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many highlights\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human says 2025 brought many highlights, including Southern Health\u2013Sant\u00e9 Sud achieving accredited status.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also points to progress on major capital expansion projects at several regional health\u00a0centres, including\u00a0Bethesda\u00a0Regional Health Centre in Steinbach,\u00a0Boundary\u00a0Trails Health Centre, and\u00a0Portage\u00a0Regional Health Centre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another positive has been the addition of new physicians, clinical staff, and support staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been fantastic to welcome some new bodies into the Southern Health world. So [we are]\u00a0really happy\u00a0to welcome all of them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Southern Health\u2013Sant\u00e9 Sud has also rolled out new provincial programs, including the Digital Front Door.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] provides\u00a0an electronic\u00a0access to the RAAM clinic, which is the Rapid Access to Addiction Medicine. So, if someone&#8217;s not comfortable presenting in person,\u00a0they&#8217;ve\u00a0got that digital appointment booking\u00a0option, which has been great to just expand outreach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other new initiatives include patient safety monitoring, cultural awareness training, and Manitoba Mental Health and Addictions Connect, a centralized intake service for youth mental health providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human also highlights participation in a Canadian Public Health Association national conference in Winnipeg, where\u00a0they\u00a0presented on a\u00a0groundbreaking\u00a0project\u00a0enhancing palliative care with\u00a0First Nations communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis innovative initiative, which has been carried out in partnership with the Dakota Ojibwe Health Services and five local First Nations, has been designed to bridge gaps in palliative care and ensure that culturally relevant services are accessible to Indigenous communities in the region.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to strengthen access to French-language services continue, along with workforce development initiatives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0have to\u00a0highlight the four programs for the practical nursing through Assiniboine College that are going on within our region specifically at present to really prepare these individuals to become licensed practical nurses. So,\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0really excited to welcome these future LPNs if they so choose to work within our region.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Challenges\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the many successes, Human says the year also brought significant challenges, including a measles outbreak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a lot of work for our public health, healthy living teams, as well as our acute facilities and the clinics and so on and so forth. Just ensuring access to the services that are needed for those that do receive a diagnosis of measles.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wildfire season also had a major impact, particularly for northern Manitobans who were forced to\u00a0relocate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effects on the northern residents within Manitoba and them having to\u00a0relocate\u00a0to all of us within southern Manitoba and the other regional health authorities as well. It was a lot of quick work to be able to set up services\u00a0and also\u00a0just heavy hearts for these individuals having to\u00a0relocate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Human says\u00a0staff responded\u00a0immediately\u00a0to support those displaced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur staff just jumped in with both feet to be able to support in any way possible.
