{"id":376791,"date":"2025-12-28T21:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T21:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/376791\/"},"modified":"2025-12-28T21:00:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T21:00:07","slug":"timothee-chalamet-wore-strong-prescription-glasses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/376791\/","title":{"rendered":"Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet Wore Strong Prescription Glasses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/josh-safdie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_josh-safdie\" data-tag=\"josh-safdie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Safdie<\/a>\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/marty-supreme\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marty-supreme\" data-tag=\"marty-supreme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marty Supreme<\/a>,\u201d now in theaters, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/timothee-chalamet\/\" id=\"auto-tag_timothee-chalamet\" data-tag=\"timothee-chalamet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Timothee Chalamet<\/a> plays an ambitious young man from New York\u2019s Lower East Side convinced that table tennis is the way forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe time period is 1952, and Marty is a hustler who works at the family shoe store, pretending not to have a size in stock so he can sell a customer a more expensive pair. On the side, he\u2019s always looking for that next get-rich quick scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film stars Fran Drescher as Marty\u2019s mother, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A\u2019zion, \u201cShark Tank\u201d personality Kevin O\u2019Leary and Gwyneth Paltrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSafdie spent over six years writing the project. To bring that authenticity to the performance, Safdie didn\u2019t just put Chalamet in prop glasses; he went one step further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpeaking in front of a packed audience earlier this month at a Hollywood panel, Safdie said, \u201cAt the time, we said, we were going to put +10 contact lenses in your eyes, and we\u2019re gonna put -10 prescription lenses in front of them so that when his glasses fall off, he can\u2019t see shit.\u201d When Chalamet tried on that combination, Safdie recalled receiving a call from the actor. \u201cHe calls me, and he says, \u2018I\u2019ve got the +10s in right now, I\u2019m pretty dizzy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to Safdie, Chalamet described it as feeling like \u201che was in a fishbowl.\u201d But Chalamet was determined. Safdie said Chalamet told him, \u201cI\u2019ll do anything you ask me to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tProsthetics artist Michael Fontaine applied pockmarks, freckles and nicks to Chalamet\u2019s face. \u201cYou felt that with the scars and nicks, he\u2019s been in fights, and he\u2019s from the street,\u201d Safdie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe makeup was so convincing that even co-star Paltrow believed it was real. Paltrow plays faded movie star Kay Stone, who is wooed by Marty. She admitted, \u201cI had no idea.\u201d She went on to say, \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh my gosh, he\u2019s got little acne scars,\u2019 and was like, \u2018I\u2019m so surprised by how you never see that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith Fontaine\u2019s prosthetics and the glasses, and his hair in the 1950s style, Safdie says, \u201cWhen he had them in, he was Marty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChalamet also strived for authenticity in his performance and spent years preparing for the role. He took every opportunity to play table tennis because he wanted to appear like a professional player when shooting began. He also trained with table tennis expert Diego Schaaf to help coordinate and choreograph the games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the film, Marty faces off against Koto Endo, who is played by real-life table tennis champion Koto Kawaguchi. He loses to him during a tournament in London, then finds himself face-to-face with him during a match in Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAsked about playing against Kawaguchi, Chalamet said the pressure was \u201chuge.\u201d But he also needed to get it right and felt \u201ca responsibility to that community and to the aficionados and people that are passionate about that sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSafdie added that during filming, Chalamet \u201cwould be so in character, he\u2019s like, \u2018I want to win the next points. We have to play.&#8217;\u201d Kawaguchi was game. \u201cAt one point he said to me, it\u2019s like, you know, I\u2019m not an actor, you know, I\u2019m a table tennis player.
