They went 13-0 in the regular season, staking their claim as the only undefeated team headed into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playoff-bracket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">College Football Playoff<\/a>. The Hoosiers took home the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/47205407\/big-ten-conference-championship-college-football-winners-records-stats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Big Ten championship<\/a> versus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/194\/ohio-state-buckeyes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ohio State<\/a>. To cap their streak of success, their quarterback, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4837248\/fernando-mendoza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fernando Mendoza,<\/a> also became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/47298246\/fernando-mendoza-becomes-1st-indiana-hoosier-win-heisman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This recent period of prosperity adds to Indiana&#8217;s storied legacy in sports. As the Hoosiers prepare to take on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/333\/alabama-crimson-tide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alabama Crimson Tide<\/a> in this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/story\/_\/page\/CFPBowls25\/2025-2026-college-football-playoff-bowl-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rose Bowl <\/a>on New Year&#8217;s Day, only time will tell if the Midwest state can claim another championship in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, let&#8217;s reflect on meaningful milestones across Indiana sports teams, from the original &#8220;Hoosiers&#8221; to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/player\/stats\/_\/id\/4433403\/caitlin-clark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Caitlin Clark<\/a>, and everything in between.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>March 1954 &#8212; Milan High School wins state basketball championship<\/p>\n<p>On a last-second shot from senior guard Bobby Plump, Milan High School defeated Muncie Central 32-30, cementing its place in Indiana basketball history and beyond. The underdog team eventually inspired the beloved 1986 film &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/video\/clip\/_\/id\/44039168\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hoosiers<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>January 1968 &#8212; Indiana football reached the Rose Bowl<\/p>\n<p>Before the success of the current Indiana football team, there were the 1967 Hoosiers, coached by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/blog\/bigten\/post\/_\/id\/133753\/top-5-all-time-coaches-indiana-hoosiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Pont<\/a>. After entering the season unranked, Indiana rose to No. 4 in the country and played in the Rose Bowl, where the Hoosiers lost to USC 14-3.<\/p>\n<p>May 1973 &#8212; The Pacers win their third ABA championship<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/ind\/indiana-pacers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indiana Pacers<\/a> became the most successful franchise in ABA history after defeating the Kentucky Colonels 88-81 in Game 7 of the ABA championship. In 1976, the Pacers were one of four ABA teams that merged with the NBA.<\/p>\n<p>March 1976 &#8212; A perfect season<\/p>\n<p>In 1976, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/37033282\/the-vast-coaching-tree-bob-knight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bob Knight<\/a> coached the Indiana men&#8217;s basketball team to a 32-0 record, culminating in the national title with a win over Michigan. No Division I men&#8217;s basketball team has repeated the feat since.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"380\" width=\"570\"\/>Bob Knight retired from coaching at Texas Tech in\u00a0February 2008, finishing with a then-record\u00a0902 career wins.\u00a0Rich Clarkson\/NCAA Photos via Getty ImagesMay 1977 &#8212; Janet Guthrie breaks barriers at Indianapolis 500<\/p>\n<p>In 1977, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/watch\/film\/3043d72a-390d-4164-aedd-57f51cee13ec\/qualified\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Janet Guthrie<\/a> became the first woman to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Guthrie finished 29th due to engine issues. The following year, Guthrie made history again by finishing ninth, the best by a woman until Danica Patrick came in fourth in 2005.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"855\" width=\"570\"\/>Janet Guthrie, now 87, is in the NASCAR Hall of Fame and was honored in 2024 with the prestigious Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions, recognizing her pioneering career.\u00a0ISC Archives\/CQ-Roll Call Group via Getty ImagesMarch 1979 &#8212; Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/stats\/_\/id\/2335\/larry-bird\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Larry Bird<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/282\/indiana-state-sycamores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indiana State<\/a> faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/stats\/_\/id\/2334\/magic-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Magic Johnson<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/127\/michigan-state-spartans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michigan State<\/a> in the NCAA championship game, the much-anticipated matchup resulted in the highest TV ratings in college basketball history. He&#8217;s also the only person to win NBA MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.\u00a0Focus on Sport via Getty ImagesMarch 1984 &#8212; The NFL arrives in Indianapolis<\/p>\n<p>After a stadium dispute with the city, Baltimore Colts owner Robert Irsay secretly moved the team to Indianapolis in the middle of the night, packing up the organization in over a dozen moving trucks. In a swift turn of events, the Baltimore Colts are now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/ind\/indianapolis-colts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>October 1993 &#8212; &#8220;Rudy&#8221; releases in Theaters<\/p>\n<p>Based on the life of Daniel &#8220;Rudy&#8221; Ruettiger, a scrappy walk-on who dreamed of playing football for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/87\/notre-dame-fighting-irish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Notre Dame,<\/a> the inspiring movie starring Sean Astin as Rudy became an instant underdog classic.<\/p>\n<p>May 1995 &#8212; Reggie Miller&#8217;s 8 points in 9 seconds<\/p>\n<p>A flurry of points from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/552\/reggie-miller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reggie Miller<\/a> stunned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nba\/team\/_\/name\/ny\/new-york-knicks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Knicks<\/a> in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Trailing 105-99 with 18.7 seconds remaining, Miller hit two 3-pointers and two free throws to steal a 107-105 win for Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>April 1998 &#8212; Colts draft Peyton Manning<\/p>\n<p>It was the beginning of an era. In 1998, the Colts selected quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.ph\/nfl\/player\/stats\/_\/id\/1428\/peyton-manning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peyton Manning<\/a> out of Tennessee with the No. 1 pick. The face of Indianapolis football for over a decade, Manning won a Super Bowl with the Colts and became the first player to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/43691267\/who-won-nfl-mvp-all-winners-list-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">named MVP<\/a> four times (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"420\" width=\"570\"\/>Peyton Manning left a lasting legacy in Indiana, particularly with the Peyton Manning Children&#8217;s Hospital. The Hoosiers have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/47250814\/ncaa-mens-soccer-championship-all-winners-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">second-most national championships<\/a> in men&#8217;s DI soccer.<\/p>\n<p>June 2013 &#8212; Indiana Hoosiers baseball clinches first CWS berth<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosiers baseball team swept powerhouse Florida State in the Super Regional. The games were held in a bubble-like format around the Indianapolis area.
